Men's soccer drops season opener to Ursinus

The Cougars' men's soccer team began its 2023 campaign on Friday evening, dropping a non-conference match to the Bears of Ursinus College by a score of 8-0. The clash took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. The match served as the season-opener for both squads.

Following a scoreless opening 11 minutes of action, the Bears took the lead, as Julian Faust found Harry Lorenc. Faust sent a beautiful pass through the box, which Lorenc capitalized on by tapping it home. Eight minutes later, Ursinus increased its advantage to 2-0 when Faust collected a rebound before putting the ball home. The original shot, taken by Simon Muther, was stopped by Aiden Ally, before Faust found the back of the net.

At the 26:35 mark of the contest, the Bears struck again, taking a commanding 3-0 edge when Lorenc sent a cross into the box, and after being deflected off the goal post, Faust sliced home a shot from just inside the 10-yard mark. Ursinus would add two more tallies in the 36th minute of the stanza to increase its advantage to 5-0. Muther accounted for the first of those two aforementioned tallies, with Enver Desic earning the other, scoring on a one-timer off a gorgeous feed from Muther.

In the second stanza, Ursinus would score a barrage of goals late in the period, earning tallies in the 84th (Colin Deal from Faust), 85th (Faust from Lorenc), and 88th (Patrick Tormey, unassisted) marks.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, returner Taye Simon registered two shots, while Aiden Ally made seven saves.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Reinhart Field in the Bronx to battle the Privateers of SUNY Maritime. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
