Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Taye Simon registers goal in Cougars' 5-1 loss to Privateers

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team fell to 0-2 on the 2023 campaign on Wednesday evening, falling to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 5-1. The non-conference clash took place at Reinhart Field in the Bronx. The Privateers, who dropped their first match this past Sunday to SUNY Delhi, evened their record at 1-1.

Cougars goalkeeper Aiden Ally kept SUNY Maritime at bay in the early stages of the contest, making multiple solid saves. The Privateers were able to break through in the eighth minute, though. After Jake Rodriguez's shot was blocked by Ally, Chris Vazquez collected the rebound before blasting it home to give the hosts a 1-0 edge. That aforementioned goal was the only tally of the contest until late in the opening session, when Fanis Tsatalios scored from 25 yards out to give Maritime a 2-0 cushion as time expired on the half.

In the second session, Jack Burkhardt gave the Privateers a commanding 3-0 lead in the 55th minute, and briefly thereafter, Omar Matute buried a ball home in the 59th to catapult the hosts to a 4-0 advantage. Later, in the 87th minute, Matute notched his second goal of the game, slashing home a shot inside the box to make it 5-0 Maritime.

Medgar Evers was able to avoid the shutout, as the Cougars scored their lone goal when veteran Isaac Akindipe sent an excellent free kick pass to Taye Simon, who scored on a header to close out the scoring for the evening.

For the most part, SUNY Maritime controlled the tempo, out-shooting the Cougars 38-4, including a 14-1 edge in the shots-on-goal category. The Privateers also earned 12 corner kick opportunities, well Medgar Evers had none.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Ally did register nine saves.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Aviator Field to take on York College in a non-conference match. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
