Cougars struggle to establish offensive rhythm in loss to CUNYAC foe Lehman College

Box Score The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Wednesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 92-54. The game took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 2-13 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-4 CUNYAC), while the Lightning won their fourth straight game to improve to 8-6, staying unblemished in conference play (4-0) in the process.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, newcomer Adrian Budhu tied for the team high of 12 points on the evening. He also grabbed four rebounds while dishing a pair of assists. Standout Nicholas Guillen tied Budhu for the team high of 12 points, and guard Nicholas Bocharov chipped in with six points. Forward Jerome Hodges' five rebounds led all Cougars.

In the victory for Lehman, Parris Kai connected on eight of his 10 attempts from the floor, while also knocking down all four of his freebees to finish with a game-high 21 points. The youngster also tied for the game-high of nine rebounds, as well. Jayden Stephen registered 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and Lasana Camara finalized his evening with 10 points and five boards. Finally, it was DeAundre Manuel finishing with eight points and eight caroms.

A converted jumper by Guillen gave the Cougars a 3-2 advantage 94 seconds into the game, but it was all Lehman College from there. Leading 10-7 with 14:57 remaining in the opening half, the Lightning rattled off 16 straight points over a span of 4:22 to open up a commanding 26-7 advantage. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Kai's eight points during the spurt.

Lehman gradually built its lead as the first half progressed, eventually taking its biggest lead of the session with one second remaining in the half via a Stephens jumper. After 20 minutes of action, the Lightning led 50-21.

Medgar Evers trailed by 34 (59-25) in the early stages of the second stanza, but the Cougars fought to stay above the waves, going on a 9-0 run over a span of 1:42 to slice the Lehman lead to 25 (59-34). Consecutive hoops by Budhu highlighted the run for the visitors. Medgar continued to push, pulling to within 20, 65-45, after Guillen and Budhu converted on consecutive jumpers with less than 13 minutes remaining.

Despite the Cougars' valiant attempt at making the CUNYAC clash competitive, the Lightning dominated the final 12:13 of play, outscoring the Cougars 27-9 the rest of way to account for the 38-point win. Lehman's defense was so suffocating down the stretch, as the Lightning allowed just one Cougars field goal over a stretch of 9:51 (12:13-2:22).

Lehman's offense was cooking all evening, as the hosts connected on 55.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (36-65), including a blistering 62 percent from inside the arc (33-53). Medgar Evers shot just a clip over 30 percent (20-66, 30.3 percent) for the night. Lehman dominated the glass, snatching 59 boards to the Cougars' 27, and the Lightning held a slim 14-10 in the assists column. Medgar Evers did tally 15 steals to Lehman's nine, and the Cougars won the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues while the Lightning had 21.

Medgar Evers will return to the court Friday evening, as the Cougars will battle Baruch College in a game at the Cougars Cave. Start-time for that CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 8:00pm.
