Sheily Quezada and Aaliyah Lyons register double-doubles in Medgar Evers' loss to Baruch

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost its third consecutive contest, tonight falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 84-50. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 4-6 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-3 CUNYAC), while Baruch improved to 9-7 (4-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Sheily Quezada posted another double-double, scoring 13 points while posting game-highs of 18 rebounds and four swatted shots. He also added three steals and recorded a pair of dimes. Aaliyah Lyons posted a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of assists, and point guard Jennifer Metra finished with nine points and six boards.

For the Bearcats, Mia Castillo put on an all-time performance for her squad, draining 20 of 39 shots (51 percent), including six of 12 from long range, to finish with a game-high 50 points. She also added nine steals, snatched eight boards, and dished two assists. Elissa Leung contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and D'Andre McRae narrowly missed recording a double-double, as she finished with a game-high 10 steals to go along with nine boards and six points.

Medgar Evers took an early 2-0 lead 31 seconds into the action when Andecia Liverpool converted on a layup. Baruch then put together a sensational 21-2 run over the ensuing 6:31 to grab a 17-point edge (21-4). Castillo scored 12 points for the Bearcats during that spurt. The Cougars tried to claw back, finishing the quarter on a 6-0 run thanks to two points apiece from Quezada, Mariame Gueye, and Chaniya Daughtry. After one quarter of play, Baruch held a 21-10 edge.

Late in the second quarter, the Bearcats held a 40-24 lead, but Baruch scored eight points inside the final 48 seconds of the half to take a commanding 48-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Castillo connected on a pair of trifectas, and Brianna Lopez converted on a layup during that ferocious late run.

Early in the third, with Medgar Evers trailing 50-24, the hosts would score 10 consecutive points to pull to within 16, 50-34, with 4:48 remaining in the period. The Cougars used a balanced attack over that span, as Lyons and Metra knocked down shots from downtown, with Quezada and Gueye each recording a bucket. The Bearcats later led 54-37 with 1:45 left in the quarter before rattling off six straight to head into the fourth with a 60-37 advantage.

Baruch dominated the fourth period, outscoring the Cougars 24-12, with Castillo accounting for 18 of those 24 aforementioned points. The Bearcats would go on to win the contest by 34 (84-50).

Neither squad shot very efficiently from the floor, with Baruch draining 36.3 percent of its shot attempts (33-91), and the Cougars hitting on just 17 of 56 shots (30.4 percent). The Bearcats committed just 14 turnovers while the Cougars finished with 49. Baruch opportunistically scored 51 points off Medgar Evers turnovers. The Bearcats held a 35-9 edge in the steals category, while also dishing 14 assists to the Cougars' eight. Medgar Evers did dominate the glass, snatching 68 boards compared to 42 for the visitors.

The Cougars will now have four days of rest before returning to the court on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will make the short trip to Brooklyn College's West Quad Gymnasium. Start time for the game is scheduled for 5:00pm.
