Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars unable to keep pace with three-time defending CUNYAC champion as Bulldogs roll, 87-53

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a frustrating defeat on Wednesday evening, falling to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College by a score of 87-53. The contest took place at the Bulldogs' West Quad Gymnasium on Bedford Avenue. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 2-15 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn improved to 9-6 (4-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, point guard Jennifer Metra led the way for Medgar Evers with a team-high 14 points (8-10 FT). Her six steals also led all players, and she snatched three rebounds, as well. Andecia Liverpool contributed 13 points and five rebounds, and sophomore Sheily Quezada finished with nine points, eight boards, a game-high four blocks, and two assists.

Ericka James paced the Bulldogs, as she scored a game-high 18 points in 23 minutes of action. Her nine rebounds also led all players, and she added three assists and a pair of steals. Suliat Afolabi netted 15 points while tallying four steals, dishing three assists, and collecting two boards, and Anna Kitch and Dior Dorsey scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Metra connected on a technical free throw prior to tip off, and that would be the only lead of the game for Medgar Evers, as Brooklyn dominated the rest of the way. The Bulldogs ran off 10 consecutive points in the opening 2:01 to take a 10-1 edge (Kitch and James each nailed a trifecta during the run). Brooklyn led by as many as 21 in the quarter before a converted layup by the Cougars' Natalia Reid-Small pulled the visitors to within 19 (28-9) as time expired on the period.

Medgar Evers used the opening 2:31 of the second quarter to draw to within 12 points (28-16), putting together a 7-0 run (9-0 dating back to the first quarter) to stay within striking distance. Metra netted five of the nine points during that aforementioned spurt. Brooklyn responded by outscoring the Cougars 22-10 for the remainder of the quarter to take a commanding 50-26 lead at the half.

With 6:48 left in the third, Brooklyn pushed its lead over the 30-point mark when Kitch converted on a triple to give the Bulldogs a 59-28 edge. A mini 5-0 run by the Cougars pulled Medgar Evers to within 26 (59-33), and the Cougars eventually inched as close as 24 points down (64-40) before the Bulldogs closed the quarter on a 9-1 run. After three periods, Brooklyn held a comfortable 73-41 advantage.

The fourth quarter turned out to be the lowest-scoring period of the evening, with the Bulldogs netting 14 points to the Cougars' 12.

For the contest, the Bulldogs connected on 30 of their 74 attempts from the floor (40.5 percent), while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 36 percent for the evening (18 for 50). Brooklyn dominated the glass, snatching 51 rebounds compared to 35 for Medgar Evers, and the Bulldogs held a 20-13 advantage in steals. Brooklyn also won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues while the Cougars finished with 30.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Bloodhounds of John Jay College to the Cougars Cave. Start time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
