Cougars defeated by Bloodhounds 72-45 in CUNYAC action at the Cougars Cave

The Cougars' women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 72-45. The conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 4-8 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-5 CUNYAC). John Jay improved to 11-6 (5-1 CUNYAC) with the victory.

Pacing the Cougars in their victory was newcomer Andecia Liverpool, as she scored a team-high 13 points while tying for the game-high of eight rebounds. Sheily Quezada contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, a game-high five blocks, three assists, and two steals, and Jennifer Metra scored 11 points and recorded three assists in 19 minutes of action.

For John Jay College, Kamryn Hammond and Chayanne Kelly each scored in double-figures with Hammond registering a game-high 22 points (8-15 FG, 6-11 3PT-FG). Hammond also snatched eight rebounds while registering five steals and dishing four assists. Kelly finished with 15 points while collecting four boards, notching four steals, and adding four dimes.

Leading 11-7 in the opening stages of the first quarter, John Jay put together a 9-0 run over a span of 4:02 to take a 20-7 advantage. Hammond accounted for five points during that aforementioned spurt. Medgar Evers would record the final two buckets of the quarter, including a basket apiece from Metra and Quezada, to pull to within four (20-11) as time expired on the period.

The Cougars continued to battle back in the opening 3:07 of the second quarter, as a converted Quezada jumper pulled the hosts to within five, 21-16. Medgar Evers was still within striking distance, down 28-22, before the Bloodhounds finished the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a commanding 38-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

With 3:57 remaining in the third, the Bloodhounds took their biggest lead of the evening, going up 25 (58-33) following a pair of made free throws by Ashley Zeolla. Medgar Evers would go on a miniature 5-0 run thanks to a made freebee by Mariame Gueye, and hoops by Metra and Liverpool, but John Jay scored the final four points of the session to take a 62-38 advantage into the fourth.

The Bloodhounds went up by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter, before going on to win the contest by 27 (72-45).

For the evening, John Jay converted on 40.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (25-62), while the Cougars earned just a 28.8 percent conversion rate (17-59). The Bloodhounds dominated the glass, snatching 50 rebounds while Medgar Evers pulled down 34, and John Jay also swiped 14 steals to the Cougars' eight. The Bloodhounds held a 19-12 edge assists, but the Cougars did block four shots compared to three for John Jay. The Bloodhounds narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while the hosts had 22.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Hunter College to battle the Hawks in another CUNYAC battle. Start time for the contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
