Cougars upended by Hawks in CUNYAC action at Hunter Sportsplex; Quezada posts ninth double-double despite defeat

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 87-35. The game took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 4-9 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-6 CUNYAC). Hunter improved to a mark of 8-10 on the year, including a record of 4-3 in conference action.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, sophomore Sheily Quezada notched her ninth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 15 points (7-15 FG), while posting game-highs of 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Her three steals also led all Cougars. Mariame Gueye drained two triples, finishing with 10 points, four boards, and two swatted shots, and Aaliyah Lyons contributed seven points a team-high three assists.

For Hunter College, the Hawks were paced by Alexa Charles' double-double, as she scored a game-high 21 points while snatching a team-high 10 rebounds. Her six steals also led all players, and the standout also contributed two assists. Makkedah Murray (6-7 FG, 4-5 FT) recorded 17 points and four steals, and Nina Hennessy nailed three shots from downtown, finalizing her evening with 15 points and six boards. Finally, Hagar Elwan added 13 points and four caroms.

The CUNYAC clash was competitive for the opening seven minutes, but it was all Hawks from that point forward. Leading 12-6 with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter, Hunter closed the period on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 22-6 edge after 10 minutes of action. Murray scored eight of the Hawks' 10 points during that aforementioned spurt.

In the second quarter, the Hawks went up by as many as 26 points (38-12) before a converted free throw by Jennifer Metra, followed by a made jumper by Quezada, cut the Cougars' deficit to 23 (38-15) as time expired on the first half.

Medgar Evers trailed Hunter 49-27 with 4:58 remaining in the third quarter, before the Hawks closed the period on a 16-6 run to snatch a 66-33 edge after 30 minutes of action. Hunter closed the game with an exclamation point, outscoring the Cougars 21-2 in the final period to account for the 52-point victory.

Hunter College was the far more efficient squad shooting the basketball, as the Hawks connected on 42.1 percent of their attempts from the floor, while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 27.7 percent (13-47 FG). Hunter held a commanding 47-35 edge on the glass, while also piling 23 assists to Medgar Evers' eight. The Cougars did hold a 10-8 advantage in blocks, but the Hawks won the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues, while the visitors had 33.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the Cougars will host the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
