Cougars boost postseason hopes with 86-38 thrashing of Cardinals; Aaliyah Lyons scores game-high 18 points in victory

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team picked up a crucial CUNYAC victory on Friday evening, boosting its postseason hopes by drubbing the Cardinals of York College by a score of 86-38 at the Cougars Cave. With the victory, Medgar Evers improved to a mark of 5-9 on the 2023-2024 campaign (2-6 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals dipped to 0-8 (0-2 CUNYAC).

Freshman Aaliyah Lyons put forth a stellar effort for the hosts, scoring a team-high 18 points (7-13 FG) while posting game-highs of five assists and five steals. She also snatched three boards, as well. Jennifer Metra connected on five of her nine attempts to finish with 13 points, and Sheily Quezada posted yet another double-double, scoring 12 points and tying for the team-high of 12 rebounds. She also added three assists and a pair of swatted shots. Andecia Liverpool also registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards, and Britonya Lloyd scored 10 points, snatched eight boards, and dished three assists. Finally, it was Mariame Gueye finalizing her evening with eight points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.

Despite the defeat for York College, Alicia Gumbs scored a game-high 25 points to go along with a team-high four steals. She also snatched three boards and dished three assists. Imani Gibson scored seven points while grabbing a whopping 21 rebounds, and Madison Plaza scored six points, collected three boards, and dished three assists.

The conference foes combined for just 12 points in the opening 6:32 of action, with the game being deadlocked at six apiece. Medgar Evers then finished the quarter strong, going on a ferocious 14-0 run to close the period and taking a 20-6 advantage after 10 minutes of play. That aforementioned spurt was paced by Lyons, as she netted six points during the run.

Medgar Evers started running away with the game in the second quarter, scoring 20 of the period's first 22 points to take a commanding 40-8 lead. A modest 8-2 run by York College brought the Cardinals to within 26 (42-16) with 1:26 remaining in the half, but consecutive buckets by Metra in the closing stages of the period put the Cougars up 46-16 as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cougars scored the opening six points, courtesy of a bucket apiece by Lyons, Metra, and Nana Samake, to push their advantage to 36 points (52-16). The hosts led by as many as 39 points in the third quarter, before taking a commanding 63-29 edge into the final period. Medgar Evers dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 23-9 to account for the 48-point victory (86-38).

For the game, the Cougars connected on 44 percent of their attempts from the floor (37-84) while the Cardinals earned a conversion rate of just 20.9 percent (14-67). Medgar Evers dominated the glass, snatching 71 rebounds to York's 34, and the Cougars also piled 23 assists compared to seven for the opposition. Medgar Evers held a 15-8 edge in steals, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while York finalized its evening with 23.

The Cougars will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Lehman College in another pivotal CUNYAC contest. Start time at the Cougars Cave is set for 6:00pm.
