Bloodhounds edge Cougars 80-78 in competitive CUNYAC clash Friday evening

The Cougars' men's basketball team put forth a valiant effort on Friday evening but were edged by John Jay College, falling to the Bloodhounds by a score of 80-78 in CUNYAC action. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-16 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-7 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 6-12 (2-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was paced by veteran Joshua Jean Pierre, as he scored a team-high 23 points (9-14 FG) while posting game-highs of 13 rebounds and four swatted shots. He also dished three assists while tallying two steals. Sharpshooter Nicholas Guillen added 21 points (3-5 3PT FG) and a game-high nine dimes to go along with five rebounds and two steals, and Michael Perez connected on four of his nine attempts from the floor, finishing with 11 points. Andre Evans Jr. had a versatile game, snatching nine rebounds, dishing eight assists, and scoring five points.

For the Bloodhounds, veteran Garrison Watkins led the way, as he posted a double-double with a game-high 31 points (11-20 FG, 9-10 FT) and a team-high 12 rebounds. He also swatted two shots, as well. The 31 points for Watkins put him over the 1,000-point mark for his intercollegiate career. In addition, Jordan Evelyn drained seven of his nine attempts from the line, finishing with 19 points, a team-high eight assists, four rebounds, and three steals, and Adrian Kopec finalized his evening with 12 points and three rebounds.

In what was an incredibly competitive game throughout which quite possibly featured the Cougars' heartiest performance of the season, Medgar Evers raced out to an early 5-0 advantage in the opening 82 seconds, with Guillen draining a jumper, and Perez knocking down a trifecta. The Bloodhounds responded with a 17-2 run over the ensuing 4:35 to catapult ahead by a score of 17-7, prompting a 30-second timeout from the Cougars.

Coming out of the timeout, Medgar Evers put together an 8-2 run, featuring three points apiece from Jean Pierre and Evans Jr., and a hoop from Guillen. That brought the Cougars to within four (19-15) with 10:13 left in the half.

John Jay would then respond with an 8-2 run of its down to reclaim its 10-point advantage from earlier in the half, but Medgar Evers roared back with a 13-2 run to take a 30-29 edge. Guillen was sensational during the run, scoring 10 of the Cougars' 13 points during the spurt, including the go-ahead layup.

The CUNYAC foes would exchange the lead three more times for the remainder of the half, and John Jay actually closed the session on a 7-2 run to take a slim 39-36 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

John Jay maintained its lead for the opening 5:34 of the second half, until a converted layup by Jean Pierre put Medgar Evers ahead, 52-51. Later, a drained triple gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game, a seven-point edge, 62-55, with 10:09 left.

The Bloodhounds would battle back over the ensuing 4:27, outscoring the hosts 13-6 to knot the game at 68 apiece. The game would be tied twice more (70-70 and 72-72) before the Bloodhounds took the lead for good on a converted trifecta by Jamir Stewart with 3:14 to go. That put the visitors ahead 75-72.

Later, the Cougars had the ball trailing 80-78 with three seconds remaining. Michael Perez would turn the ball over with 1.1 ticks left, giving the ball back the Bloodhounds, who were then set to inbound the ball from the back court.

Following a timeout, the Cougars elected not to guard the inbound pass in order to give themselves the best chance at coming up with a steal. John Jay tossed the ball into the front court, and the ball actually got tipped and stolen by Guillen, but his turn-around half-court shot attempt at the buzzer hit the ceiling, solidifying the victory for the Bloodhounds.

Medgar Evers connected on 45.6 percent of its shot attempts in the loss (31-68), while the Bloodhounds earned a conversion rate of 38.8 percent (26-67). The Cougars held a slim 41-40 edge on the glass, while also dishing 22 assists to John Jay's 16. The Bloodhounds held a 12-7 edge in steals, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished with 17.
