Hawks shoot 49.2 percent from the field, defeat Cougars, 91-70 at Hunter Sportsplex

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 91-70. The game took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 2-17 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-8 CUNYAC). Hunter improved to a mark of 8-11 on the year, including a record of 5-3 in conference action.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, freshman Nicholas Guillen put together another stellar performance, as the three-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week connected on 10 of his 17 shots to finish with a team-high 23 points. He also tied for the team-high of seven rebounds, while leading all Cougars with five assists. Freshman Jackson Bartley scored 14 points while grabbing two rebounds and dishing two assists, and veteran Joshua Jean Pierre finalized his evening with nine points, seven boards, and three dimes.

Hunter College was paced by William Brown, who put together a perfect night shooting the basketball, connecting on all four of his attempts from the floor, while also draining all six of his free throw attempts, to finish with a team-high 17 points. Kareem McDonald added 13 points and game-highs of eight rebounds and six assists, and Jack Meyers drilled three triples, finishing with 13 points and three caroms. Finally, it was Casey Meyers and Luka Jakic notching 11 points apiece.

Medgar Evers kept the game close throughout the majority of the first half, as the Cougars trailed just 35-29 with 3:54 remaining in the session. The Hawks would close the half with a big run, however, outscoring the Cougars 12-3 to take a commanding 47-32 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second session, Hunter College did a fantastic job of maintaining its lead, never letting the Cougars draw any closer than 15 points down (51-36). The Hawks went up by as many as 26 points twice in the second half, before going on to win the CUNYAC clash convincingly by 21 points.

The Hawks converted on 49.2 percent of their shot attempts for the evening (32-65), while Medgar Evers earned a 38.8 percent conversion rate (26-67). Hunter held a slim 41-38 edge on the glass, while also registering 24 assists compared to 15 for the Cougars. Hunter led 12-9 in steals, while also swatting six shots to Medgar Evers' one. Finally, the Hawks won the turnover battle, committing just 13 miscues, while forcing 19 Cougars mistakes.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the Cougars will host the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 8:00pm.
