Cardinals pull away from Cougars in second half, beat Medgar Evers, 95-73; Nicholas Guillen scores 20+ points once again

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 95-73. The conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-18 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-9 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 5-14 on the year (3-6 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Nicholas Guillen scored a game-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds. He also tied for the game-high of five assists. Michael Perez connected on four triples, finishing with 15 points and five rebounds, and veteran Joshua Jean Pierre netted 14 points, five boards, a team-high three steals, and two assists. Derek Wicker narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points and tying for the game-high of 10 rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for the Cardinals in their victory, including Olawale Kila, as he connected on seven out of his 10 attempts from the floor, finishing with team-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Aidony Nivar added 17 points, four rebounds, and a game-high four steals, and Tafari Jerome scored 16 points, dished four assists, and snatched three boards, and Bryce Haynes scored 13 points while tying for the game-high of five assists, and Tyres Desinor scored 12 points, snatched eight boards, dished four assists, and swatted two shots.

The Cardinals raced out to an early 16-3 advantage in the opening 4:37 of the contest, but the Cougars put together a 14-5 run over a span of 3:56 to slice their deficit to four points (21-17). Guillen highlighted that aforementioned run with seven points.

Later, Medgar Evers trailed by just seven (34-27) with 5:16 remaining in the first half, before York College closed the session on a 13-8 run to take a 47-35 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Guillen drilled a jumper for the Cougars' first possession of the second period that pulled Medgar Evers within 10 (47-37), but the Cardinals responded in a big way, as Abdul Seck's bucket with 12:20 remaining propelled York to the contest's first lead over 20 points (62-42). York led by 20 points or more for the remainder of the conference clash, going up by as many as 29 at one juncture (92-63) before winning the game by 22.

York College was the far more efficient squad shooting the basketball, knocking down a whopping 56.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (35-62). The Cardinals also drilled seven out of 16 from downtown (43.8 percent), and 75 percent of their free throw attempts (18-24). On the flip side, the Cougars earned an overall conversion rate of 38.2 percent (26-68). Medgar Evers hit on 23.3 percent of their launches from deep (7-30), and 66.7 percent of their free throw attempts (14-21).

The Cardinals held a slim 40-37 edge on the glass, while also dishing 23 assists compared to 15 for Medgar Evers. York held a 15-13 advantage in steals, and the teams committed 25 turnovers apiece.

The Cougars will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Lehman College in another pivotal CUNYAC contest. Start time at the Cougars Cave is set for 8:00pm.
