Joshua Jean Pierre scores career-high 27 points in Cougars' 82-68 CUNYAC loss to Hawks

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped its first game of calendar year 2024, falling to the Hunter College Hawks in CUNYAC action by a score of 82-68. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-11 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to a record of 4-9 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Medgar Evers was led by the stellar effort of Joshua Jean Pierre, as the seasoned veteran led the way with a career and game-high 27 points (10-16 FG) to go along with team-best 11 boards. He also dished three assists, swatted a pair of shots, and tallied two steals. Nicholas Guillen contributed 15 points, six caroms, three assists, and three steals, and point guard Andre Evans Jr. finalized his evening with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a game-high three blocks.

Four players scored in double figures for the Hawks in their victory, including Jack Meyers, as he posted a double-double with a team-high of 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. He also registered a pair of assists while tallying two steals. Casey Meyers scored 13 points, draining four triples in the process. His five assists also led all players, and he also contributed five rebounds and three steals. Luka Jakic posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Kareem McDonald added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

After both squads failed to score in the opening 1:54, Cougars newcomer Jerome Hodges netted the first points of the evening by draining a pair of freebees. Hunter responded by scoring 11 consecutive points, highlighted by Jakic's six points, including a slam dunk. After a converted layup by Guillen stopped the spurt to make it 11-4 in favor of the visitors, Hunter scored another 12 in a row to take a commanding 23-4 edge with 11:06 remaining in the opening half.

The Hawks continued to stay aggressive offensively, taking their biggest lead of the game, a 39-14 advantage, following a converted William Brown free throw with 4:26 left. Hunter would eventually take a 46-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Hunter retook a 25-point lead on two occasions (56-31 and 58-33), but the Cougars, showing pride, were able to draw to within 17 points down (66-49) with 7:40 remaining. Medgar Evers continued to play hard, but the Cougars were only able to get to within 14 points, as the Hawks would eventually register a 14-point victory (82-68).

The Hawks connected on 40.3 percent of their attempts from the floor (27-67), while the Cougars earned a 37.5 percent conversion rate for the evening (24-64). Hunter held a 50-39 advantage on the glass, while also piling 22 assists compared to 11 for the hosts. The Hawks narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished with 20. The Cougars did hold a 7-2 edge in the swatted shots column.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will take to the road to battle York College in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
