The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Friday, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 88-75 in Jamaica, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 2-12 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to a mark of 3-10 (1-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman guard Nicholas Guillen connected on four triples, finishing with a game-high 24 points. He also snatched five rebounds, dished three assists, and registered a pair of steals. Veteran Joshua Jean Pierre scored 17 points and recorded four assists, and junior point guard Andre Evans Jr. (4-4 FT) finalized his evening with 14 points.

For York College, Olawale Kila and Aidony Nivar tired for the team-high of 22 points. Kila also added a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with five assists and a pair of steals, while Nivar snatched four board while adding four dimes. Tyres Desinor scored 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds, dishing three assists, and tallying three steals, and Rohan Singh registered a double-double, netting 10 points, recording a game-high 10 assists, and grabbing eight boards.

In what was a seesaw battle in the early stages of the CUNYAC clash, Medgar Evers held a 6-2 advantage in the opening 1:49. That aforementioned opening spurt featured a three-point play by Evans, and a converted trifecta from Guillen. The Cardinals responded with a 12-4 run over a span of 2:55 put York ahead 14-10. The teams exchanged the lead four times over the ensuing 2:40, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when York's Austinson Cooke converted on a jumper in the paint to give the hosts a 20-19 edge.

Later in the half, with the Cardinals leading 28-23, Evans Jr. drained a triple to pull Medgar Evers to within two, 28-26, with 9:21 remaining in the opening session. York then scored 13 consecutive points over a span of 2:49 to take a commanding 41-26 advantage. That spurt was highlighted by Kila's six points, including an emphatic slam dunk to cap the run.

The Cougars, trailing by 15, scored the next six points, with Evans Jr. accounting for four of those, and Jackson Bartley converting on a layup. That inched the visitors to within nine (41-32) with 4:54 left in the half. York scored the next eight points to take an 18-point lead (50-32), and the Cardinals eventually took an 18-point edge (56-38) into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, trailing 60-38, Medgar Evers outscored the Cardinals 16-2 over a span of 2:41 to slice York's edge to eight (62-54). Jean-Pierre netted six points during that ferocious run, with Guillen contributing five. The Cardinals responded to the Cougars' push with a run of their own, outscoring the visitors 18-4 over the ensuing 6:49 to snatch a commanding 80-58 edge with 7:58 to go.

Medgar Evers put together one final push in an attempt to pull off an improbable comeback, outscoring the Cardinals 14-2 to pull to within 10 (82-72) with 2:07 left, but would be the closest the Cougars would get, as York would hold on for a double-digit victory (88-75).

York connected on 49.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (37-75), while Medgar Evers converted on under 40 percent of its shots (30-77, 39 percent). The Cardinals dominated the glass, snatching 46 boards to the Cougars' 30, and York held a 25-19 edge in the assists column. Medgar Evers win hold a 14-11 edge in the steals column, while also swatting six shots to York's one. The Cougars also won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while the Cardinals had 19.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Bronx to battle CUNYAC foe Lehman College. Start-time at the APEX Center is scheduled for 7:00pm.
