Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars finalize six-match road trip, fall to Gryphons 2-0 at Fleming Field

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team returned to the pitch last night, falling to the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence by a score of 2-0. The non-conference match took place at Fleming Field in Yonkers, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-7-1, while the Gryphons improved to 5-6.

Sarah Lawrence did most of its offensive damage in the early stages of the match, netting both of its goals within the opening 12 minutes of action. In the 10th minute of play, Nikos Diaz took a free kick from outside the box before tapping the ball over to Aidan Roney, who then found Simon Kopecky who slashed one home to put the Gryphons ahead 1-0. Two minutes later, Nicholas Fajardo added to Sarah Lawrence's advantage, heading in a pass from Kopecky. At the half, the Gryphons led 2-0.

Neither team earned much in the way of scoring opportunities in the second session, but Sarah Lawrence remained in control. Medgar Evers stayed valiant and attempted to work its way back into the match, but the Cougars were unable to break the defense and slip one past Gryphons goalkeeper Elijah Shohat.

In a match dominated by defensive tenacity, the starting goalkeepers combined to allow just a pair of goals while making three saves. Cougars netminder Clirian Nunez yielded two goals while stopping two shots, while Shohat earned the shutout, making one save.

Sarah Lawrence held an 18-6 edge in shots, and a slim 4-1 advantage in shots-on-target. The Gryphons earned two corner kick opportunities throughout the evening.

After wrapping-up this six-game road trip, the Cougars will now begin a three-match homestand, hosting CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College on Wednesday afternoon (1:30pm). The conference clash will take place at Flushing Meadows Corona Park (Field #8) in Queens, NY.
