Cougars downed by Panthers in three sets; Jennifer Metra registers three kills despite defeat

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team lost a non-conference match on Thursday evening, falling to the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers by scores of 5-25, 4-25, and 6-25. The match took place in Old Westbury, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 1-14 on the 2024 campaign, while the Panthers improved to 4-8.

Leading the way for the Cougars despite the loss was veteran outside hitter Jennifer Metra, as she registered a team-high three kills to go along with a pair of digs. Maritza Argueta's five digs were a team-best, and Britonya Lloyd added a pair of service aces and four digs.

Old Westbury's Stephanie Maser put forth a dominant performance, swatting .571 with a match-high nine kills to go along with four digs. Jonangeliz Alvarez Rodriguez's 13 services aces and eight digs were both match-highs, and Geanelle Sam led all players with eight assists. She also sprinkled in four service aces and three digs, as well. Finally, it was Mariana Gamez contributing five assists and five service aces.

With the opening set tied at two apiece, Old Westbury scored the next 17 points to snatch a commanding 19-2 advantage. Alvarez Rodriguez's nine service aces highlighted that Panthers run. Medgar Evers scored three straight thanks to an Alvarez Rodriguez service error and a pair of kills by Metra, but Old Westbury would go on to score the final six points (highlighted by Maser's two kills and Geanelle's kill and two service aces) to win the set, 25-5.

In the second set, the Panthers held a respectable 8-3 advantage before notching 17 of the final 18 points to capture it, 25-4. Alvarez Rodriguez notched four more aces and a kill during that aforementioned stretch, with Maser contributing four kills as well.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third set, Medgar Evers scored three consecutive points, courtesy of an Adacia Scotland kill, a service ace by Lloyd, and an attack error by Maser. Later, with the non-conference foes knotted at five apiece, the hosts would score 20 of the final 21 points of the set to win it, 25-6, and sweep the match. The Panthers used seven service aces and five kills to solidify the victory during that final stretch, with the Cougars' Argueta being responsible for the Cougars point, as she recorded a kill.

The Panthers swatted .388 for the evening (22-3-49), while the Cougars hit in the negative (6-12-48, -.125). Old Westbury piled a whopping 30 service aces, while also holding a 29-18 edge in digs.
