Women's volleyball turned back by CCNY in CUNYAC action at Cougars Cave

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a CUNYAC clash on Tuesday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by scores of 8-25, 11-25, and 3-25. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-15 (0-5 CUNYAC) on the 2024 campaign, while the Beavers improved to 2-10 (2-2 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the hosts, veteran Britonya Lloyd registered a team-high three kills, swatting .222 on the evening (3-1-9). She also registered a pair of digs, as well. Additionally, Jennifer Metra and Maritza Argueta each contributed two digs and one kill.

CCNY's Michelle Fernandez put forth a sensational evening for the visitors, recording a match-high 11 kills (11-2-18, .500) to go along with four service aces and a pair of digs. Bianka Catral finalized her evening with seven kills (7-2-11, .455) and a match-best nine service aces, and Serena Warner finished with five kills (5-0-6, .833). Viviana Alatorre's 23 assists led all players, and it was Rosalynda Russo piling a match-best 11 digs.

The Beavers dominated the opening set, recording 12 of their 30 service aces during it. Holding a 20-8 advantage late, CCNY ran off five straight to solidify the set, with the final two points coming courtesy of Catral service aces.

CCNY scored the first 10 points of the second set, courtesy of six Catral service aces, and two kills apiece by Catral and Warner. The Beavers stayed in control throughout the second set, never holding a lead less than 12 points. Despite the second set defeat, the Cougars got a kill apiece from Metra, Lloyd, and Argueta.

The visitors continued to impose their will in the third and final set of the evening, swatting .545 (7-1-11) while recording 12 service aces, to win it, 25-3, sweeping the match.

For the evening, CCNY hit .460 (30-7-50), while Medgar Evers hit in the negative -.114 (5-9-35). The Beavers recorded 30 service aces, registered 27 assists on the evening to Medgar Evers' four, and held a 21-13 edge in assists.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars travel to the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, NY to battle the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 12:00pm.
