Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's volleyball shows valiancy in third set before falling to Sarah Lawrence in non-conference action

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team lost a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College by scores of 3-25, 9-25, and 20-25. The match took place at the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 1-16 on the 2024 campaign, while Sarah Lawrence improved to 14-5.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Britonya Lloyd led Medgar Evers with a team-best six kills, swatting .167 in the process (6-3-18). She also chipped in three digs, as well. Jennifer Metra registered three kills and a team-high five digs, and Aliyah Chapman and Martiza Argueta finalized their afternoons with four digs apiece.

For Sarah Lawrence College, Milly Guemple's seven kills (7-3-19, .211) led all players. She also contributed five service aces in the victory. Athena Kazos hit a perfect 1.000 on the afternoon, recording six kills on six attempts, and Jenna Lehnhart added five kills. Carolyn Kelly and Alex Pantoliano recorded eight and seven service aces, respectively, and Ava Castro-Devarona's 17 assists were a match-high.

After dropping the opening two sets 25-3 and 25-9, Medgar Evers refused to go down quietly in the third set. Trailing 4-1 early in the third, the Cougars knotted the set at four apiece thanks to a Pantoliano service error, a kill by Lloyd, and an attack error by Kelly. Later, Medgar Evers fell behind 13-7 before rattling off four consecutive points to pull to within two, 13-11. That aforementioned run came courtesy of two Sarah Lawrence attack errors (one from Guemple, one from Sophie Casaillac), a kill by Lloyd, and a service ace by Metra.

The Gryphons responded to that latest Cougar run by scoring five consecutive points to take a commanding 18-11 edge, but once again, Medgar Evers continued to keep the pressure on the hosts. The Cougars used a 4-1 spurt to inch to within four points (19-15). Later, trailing 24-16, Medgar Evers fought off set and match point four straight times, courtesy of kills by Lloyd and Metra, a service ace by Lloyd, and an attack error by Guemple. The Gryphons finally secured the match on a kill Castaillac.

For the afternoon, Sarah Lawrence swatted .317 (30-11-60) compared to -.061 for Medgar Evers College. The Gryphons held a 26-3 edge in service aces, while also registering 26 digs to the Cougars' 19.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the York College Gymnasium (Jamaica, NY) to clash with the Cardinals in CUNYAC action. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
