Women's Volleyball edged by CUNYAC foe York College in five-set thriller Thursday evening

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team suffered a tough defeat on Thursday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College in CUNYAC action by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, and 8-25. The match took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-17 on the 2024 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 2-13 (1-4 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Britonya Lloyd put forth a sensational effort, leading all players with 11 kills, tying for the match-high of four service aces, and contributing 10 digs. Jennifer Metra added eight kills and a match-high 20 digs, and Aaliyah Chapman finalized her evening with a team-best seven assists to go along with 19 digs. Finally, it was Adacia Scotland putting forth a fine all-around effort, finishing with three kills, 13 digs, four assists, and three service aces.

For the Cardinals, Jachimma Onwuamaebgu's nine kills were a team-best, and her five solo blocks led all players. Maritza Ortega Ramirez finalized her evening with eight kills, 11 digs, and a pair of service aces, and Madison Plaza contributed seven kills and nine digs. Setter Samantha Panameno's 23 assists were a match-high, and she also finished with four kills, eight digs, and three service aces, and Jasmine Dias' 17 assists led all York players.

Medgar Evers held a commanding 16-9 advantage in the opening set, but a 10-5 Cardinals run pulled the hosts to within a pair, 21-19. The Cougars then got two points back courtesy of an attack error by Ortega, and a service aces by Maritza Argueta, as Medgar Evers went up 23-19. After Plaza registered a kill for the Cardinals, Lloyd answered with a kill of her own to put the Cougars on the cusp of a set one win 24-20). After Scotland served a ball out, Lloyd once again spiked a ball to give Medgar Evers a 25-21 victory in the first.

The Cougars trailed 13-9 in the second set before running off six consecutive points to catapult ahead by a score of 15-13. That aforementioned run featured a kill apiece by Metra, Lloyd, and Sariyah Brumaire, as well as one attack error apiece from Simranjit Kaur, Ortega, and Gumbs. Medgar Evers later held leads of 18-15 and 23-20, staying poised and determined to take a 2-0 edge in sets. After Metra's service error sliced the Cougars' lead to two (23-21), Jeana Clemons of York served the ball into the net to give Medgar Evers a 24-21 advantage. The two CUNYAC foes alternated points after that, with the clincher for the Cougars (25-22) coming courtesy of a Kaur service error.

York held an edge of 19-12 in the third set, before the Cougars rattled off three straight points to inch to within four (19-15) thanks to a pair of Cardinal attack errors, and a Metra kill. York would then score the next four, as Brumaire served one out, following by Dias registering consecutive service aces, and Panameno notching a kill. At that juncture, the Cardinals led 23-15, but the Cougars continued to battle. Medgar Evers would answer those four York points with four of their own, highlighted by a Scotland kill, to pull to within four (23-19). The Cardinals wouldn't be denied in this set, however, notching the final two points to grab the set victory via a Metra service error, and an attack error by Lloyd.

In the fourth set, York College held leads of 9-3, 13-6, and 16-14, before going on a sizable run to put the set out of reach. The Cardinals scored seven consecutive points to snatch a commanding 23-14 edge with a spurt that featured four kills by the hosts (two by Panameno, one by Plaza, one by Gumbs). Later, down 24-15, Medgar Evers fought off set point twice thanks to Lloyd registering both a kill and a service ace. York would then clinch the fourth set when Metra's attack went into the net, as the Cardinals won it, 25-17, and squared the match at two sets apiece.

Lloyd got the Cougars started on the right track in the decisive fifth set, registering a kill and a service ace to give Medgar Evers a 2-0 edge. However, it was all Cardinals in the fifth after that. Trailing 3-1, York College scored five straight to jump ahead by a score of 6-3. Onwuamaegbu tallied a kill during that run, with Kaur adding a pair of service aces. Later, the Cardinals led 11-4, and one last Cougars push brought the visitors to within respectable distance, as Medgar Evers trailed just 12-8. York would slam the door on the set and the match, however, scoring three straight points to win the fifth, 15-8, and the match, 3-2. The Cardinals' 13th and 14th points of set five came via kills by Ramirez and Plaza, with the clincher coming when Argueta's attack attempt sailed out.

Both teams hit in the negative in what was an extremely competitive match, with the Cardinals hitting -.019 (33-36-158), and the Cougars finishing with a -.070 percentage (26-36-142). York held a slight edge in digs (77-76), while also piling 17 service aces to Medgar Evers' 10. The hosts finished with advantages in kills (33-26) and assists (29-20), as well.

The Cougars will now have three days off before returning to action on Monday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Hunter College Hawks to the Cougars Cave in what will be Medgar Evers' final home match of the 2024 campaign. Prior to the match, Jennifer Metra and Aliyah Chapman will be honored by the Medgar Evers College Department of Athletics and the women's volleyball program. Start-time for the match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
