Men's soccer edged by Hawks 2-1 in CUNY action: Nunez makes 15 saves, Jean scores goal despite loss

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team put forth a valiant effort on Saturday morning, but ultimately fell to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 2-1. With the loss, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 2-12-1 on the 2024 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 4-10-1 (2-4 CUNYAC).

After 28 minutes of scoreless soccer, Hunter College broke through with a tally in the 29th minute when Ahmed Abukar slipped in a pass from Christian Rodriguez to make it 1-0 in favor of the Hawks. 13:38 later, at 42:30, Rafael Villacres would score what would turn out to be the match-winner, slashing home a feed from Rodriguez to make it 2-0 in favor of Hunter. Medgar Evers was able to get on the board in the closing seconds of the half, as Bertini Jean netted an unassisted goal (44:43) to trim the Hawks' edge to 2-1. That aforementioned score would hold steady as time expired on the opening session.

In the second session, both teams would have their chances, as the Hawks registered 14 shots, including nine on-goal that were all stopped by Cougars netminder Clirian Nunez. The Cougars managed seven shots in the final 45 minutes, with four of those on-target, all of which were saved by Hunter goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz. Neither team would break through for a tally in the second session, as the Hawks held on for a hard-fought 2-1 win.

For Medgar Evers, Nunez was exceptional, making a whopping 15 saves despite taking the loss in net. His counterpart, Matthew Heimowitz, stopped six shots, earning the victory in goal.

Hunter College held a 27-13 edge in shots, while also earning eight corner kicks compared to Medgar Evers' six.

Medgar Evers will play its final road CUNYAC match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Jamaica, NY to battle York College. The contest will take place at York's Outdoor Athletic Complex, with a start-time of 3:00pm.
