Cougars and Cardinals play to 3-3 tie in CUNYAC play; Bernado Guerrier registers two goals, Taye Simon earns three assists

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team played a CUNYAC match at York College on Tuesday afternoon, with the Cougars and Cardinals playing to a 3-3 deadlock. The match took place at York's Outdoor Athletic Complex in Jamaica, Queens. With the tie, Medgar Evers is now 2-12-2 on the 2024 campaign (0-5-1 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals' output is 1-11-2 (0-6-1 CUNYAC).

In what turned out to be a wild match, the Cougars struck first when Oscar Garcia redirected Taye Simon's corner kick into the net to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors in the fifth minute. Later, at 19:04, it was Simon and Bernado Guerrier combining for a goal, with Guerrier slashing a ball home to make it 2-0 Medgar Evers. The Cougars had three opportunities to add to their advantage, but Cardinals netminder George Molina answered the call each time, turning away those Cougars shots. Medgar Evers held a 2-0 edge after 45 minutes.

York College came out in the second half putting a ton of pressure on the Cougars. The Cardinals' Michael Martey's shot from deep was saved by a diving Chris Edosomwan, and that was followed by Stanley Sanchez's shot hitting the crossbar. A few players later, the Cardinals finally cashed in when Suwesi Richards scored from the 18-yard box (at 48:42) to cut the Cougars' lead in half, 2-1

Guerrier, who had scored the Cougars' second goal of the afternoon, once again found the back of the net, blasting home Simon's feed to make it 3-1 in favor of Medgar Evers at 52:30. For Simon, it was his third assist of the afternoon.

York College, down a pair, refused to go down quietly. Abdul Seck's tally at 65:25 brought the hosts to within one (3-2). Later, the Cardinals netted the equalizer at the 85:07 mark when Ernest Bawilliam was contacted in the box off of a corner kick. Bawilliam would then take advantage of the ensuing penalty kick, tapping it home, past Edosomwan, to square the CUNYAC clash at three goals apiece.

Medgar Evers did have a chance to register a potential match-winning goal in the latter stages of the contest, but Molina stoned Juan Lima's attempt. The Cougars registered one more shot for the afternoon – by Simon – but that hooked right of the goal, as the teams settled for a 3-3 deadlock.

In what turned out be an extremely competitive match, York totaled more shots (23-22), but Medgar Evers earned more shots on-target (10-9), as well as corner kicks (5-3). Molina stopped seven shots, while Edosomwan recorded six saves.

The Cougars will wrap-up their season on Friday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will host the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on Friday, October 25, at the Red Hook Recreation Center (Brooklyn, NY). Start-time for the match is scheduled for 2:00pm.
