Men's Cross Country

Cross country teams compete in QCC Invitational, navigate Van Cortlandt Park course for first time in '24

The Medgar Evers College men's and women's cross country teams continued to sharpen their skills as the squads approach the stretch run of the 2024 campaign, competing this past Sunday at the Queensborough Community College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. The Cougars' women's squad finished fourth out of 17 participating schools, while the men came in 16th out of 21. Head Coach Hugh Reid spoke glowingly of the teams following the completion of the meet.

"The Queensborough Invitational was the first opportunity for our teams to compete on the challenging Van Cortlandt Park course," Reid said. "This season, our expectation was to feel our way through the course and see where we could make adjustments prior to running the CUNYAC championship races. As expected, the hills were difficult, especially for the men, but we managed to put forth a very valiant effort."

For the Cougars' women's squad, Kenia Irish-Bramble was the team's first finisher on the 5K course, coming in 15th overall with a time of 23:37.2. Newcomer Saviah Williams was the second Medgar Evers runner to cross the tape, as she came in 18th place overall (23:58.4), with Nana Samake (44th overall, 27:08.7) and Rinnah Brown (53rd overall, 28:05.1) coming in fourth and fifth for the Cougars, respectively. Rounding out the Medgar Evers female scorers was Thenica Thompson, who came in 72nd with a time of 29:09.4.

Jose Janvier paced the Cougars in the men's 8K meet, as he was the first Medgar Evers runner to finalize the course, coming in 94th overall with a time of 38:28. The next three Cougars finishers were Jahiem Johnson (99th overall, 38:50), Chrisnel Nicolas (111th overall, 39:28), and Cameron Nelson (112th overall, 39:28.2). Rounding out Medgar Evers' male scorers was Shacan Forde, who came in 129th place overall with a time of 48:31.

The men's and women's cross country teams will return to the course on Saturday, as the squads will travel to Center Valley, PA to compete in the Desales University Invitational. Start-time for the meet is scheduled for 10:30am.
