Cougars defeated by Bloodhounds in three sets Tuesday evening in CUNYAC affair

The Cougars' women's volleyball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by scores of 5-25, 7-25, and 15-25. The match took place at the Doghouse in New York, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 1-13 overall (0-4 CUNYAC), while John Jay improved to 12-5 on the season, and 2-1 in league play.

Leading the way for the Cougars was veteran Britonya Lloyd, as she registered a team-high three kills to go along with three digs. Jennifer Metra contributed seven digs on the evening, while Adacia Scotland added six.

John Jay was paced by the combination of Alex Overkamp and Rylea Sandel, as those standouts tied for the match-high of six kills. Josanne Lewis swatted .714 (5-0-7), finalizing her evening with five kills and three service aces, and Leah Kaplan and Meghan Smith registered 14 and nine assists, respectively. Finally, it was Malia Reyes leading all players with seven service aces.

In the opening set, Aliyah Chapman brought the Cougars to within a point (3-2) with a kill, but the Bloodhounds would then score 22 of the final 25 points of the set to win it, 25-5. John Jay College dominated the opening set, swatting .500 (12-2-20).

John Jay's Ellemedina Hodzic started the second set with three consecutive service aces to give the Bloodhounds a 4-0 advantage. Sandel kept the momentum rolling with three straight kills to push the Bloodhounds' lead to 9-1. Later, three service aces from Reyes helped the hosts build a lead of 12 points (16-4), and the Bloodhounds would eventually notch the final six points of set two to win it, 25-7.
 
The Cougars trailed 3-1 in the third set before an attack error by Hannah Knox and a service ace by Martiza Argueta squared the set at three apiece. Medgar Evers trailed by scores of 8-6 and 9-8 in the third, but came back to tie the set each time. Later, down 14-10, the Cougars ran off three consecutive points via two Bloodhounds attack errors, and an Argueta service ace, to pull to within one (14-13). John Jay would dominate the remainder of the set, though, outscoring the visitors 11-2 from there, scoring six of those 11 points via service aces (four from Theresa Schmitt, and two from Hodzic).
 
For the evening, the Bloodhounds swatted .324 (35-12-71) while the Cougars hit in the negative (5-7-28, -.071). John Jay held a commanding 27-3 edge in service aces, while also registering 33 assists. Medgar Evers tallied 21 digs compared to 14 for the hosts.

The Cougars will return to action Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers stays on the road to battle SUNY Old Westbury. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
