Sheily Quezada posts double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) in Cougars' season-opening loss to Rams

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost its season opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Rams of Farmingdale State College by a score of 58-39. The game took place at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, NY. The Cougars are 0-1 to the start the 2024 campaign, while the Rams are 1-0.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout junior Sheily Quezada posted game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Her four assists were a team-high, and she also swatted two shots. Newcomer Alexis Davis put forth a solid game, scoring 10 points while snatching six rebounds and blocking two shots, and Jennifer Metra finalized her afternoon with five points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Four players scored in double figures for the Rams, including Taneece Wooden, who scored a team-high 15 points while pulling down seven rebounds and tallying two steals. Gemma Pohalski posted a double-double with 14 points, and a team-best 10 rebounds. She also tied for the game-high of six assists, and tied all players with five steals. Isabella Greenwald finished with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals, and Mia Simmons scored 10 points, registered five steals, and snatched four rebounds.

Farmingdale State started the game scoring eight consecutive points, courtesy of a converted trifecta by Greenwald, and five straight from Taneece Wooden. After Quezada got the Cougars on the board with a jumper, back-to-back layups by Emily Tsiforas and Pohalski put Farmingdale State ahead, 12-2, with 4:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Medgar Evers then used a 6-2 run, highlighted by Metra's four points, to cut its deficit to 14-8, but the Rams tallied the final eight points of the first quarter to take a 22-8 advantage into the second.

The Cougars trailed 30-19 at the halftime break and scored the opening basket of the third – a jumper by Quezada - to close the gap to nine. Farmingdale State then responded with 12 consecutive points, including four points apiece by Simmons and Pohalski to take a commanding 42-21 edge.

The Rams led by as many as 23 in the fourth quarter before advancing for a 19-point triumph (58-39).

Farmingdale won the game despite shooting just 25.6 percent, as the Rams connected on just 22 out of 86 attempts from the floor. Medgar Evers shot 38.6 percent from the floor draining 17 out of 44 attempts. The Rams held a 54-47 edge on the glass, while also dishing 15 assists to the Cougars' 10. Farmingdale won the turnover battle by a significant margin, committing just 18 miscues compared to 38 for the visitors.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to William Paterson University's Sports and Recreation Center in Wayne, NJ to battle the Pioneers. Start-time for that game is scheduled for 8:00pm.
