Cougars unable to establish offensive rhythm in loss at William Paterson University

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team lost a non-conference game last night, falling to the Pioneers of William Paterson University by a score of 86-21. The contest took place in Wayne, NJ. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 0-2 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while William Paterson improved to 2-1.

On a night where most of the Cougars struggled offensively, standout Sheily Quezada was the team's leading scorer with six points. She also tied for the game-high of seven rebounds, while leading all players with three swatted shots. Veteran Jennifer Metra and newcomer Patricia Bland finished with four points apiece.

Brianna Smith paced the Pioneers with a game-high 14 points. Her six assists led all players, and she also collected five rebounds. Mattison Chiera added 12 points, five rebounds, and a pair of assists, and Renee Wells finalized her evening with 11 points, four dimes, four steals, and two rebounds. Patty Walsh tied for the game-high of seven rebounds, and Kaelyn Gowdy's five steals was a game-high.

In a game dominated by the hosts, William Paterson took a commanding 23-4 lead through the first quarter of action. The Pioneers outscored the Cougars 18-3 in the second quarter and entered the halftime break up by 34 (41-7). William Paterson maintained control of the game and continued to build on its lead before securing the 86-21 home win.

For the evening, the Pioneers connected on 37.1 percent of their attempts from the floor (33-89), while the Cougars earned just a 20.9 percent conversion rate (9-43). William Paterson held a commanding 54-38 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 12 turnovers compared to 44 for Medgar Evers. The Cougars swatted five shots on the night, while the hosts had three.

Medgar Evers will look to get in the win column this Saturday, as the Cougars will stay on the road, traveling to the Asplundh Field House in Bryn Athyn, PA to take on the Bryn Athyn Lions. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
