In low-scoring affair, Cougars defeated by Lions; Quezada posts game-highs of 22 points, 16 rebounds despite defeat

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team is still searching for its first victory, as the Cougars suffered a 56-41 defeat to the Lions of Bryn Athyn on Saturday afternoon. The contest took place at the Asplundh Field House in Bryn Athyn, PA. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 0-3 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Lions improved to 2-0.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Sheily Quezada put forth a tremendous effort, posting game-highs of 22 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks. Newcomers Alexis Davis and Ciarah Haggins scored seven and six points, respectively.

For Bryn Athyn, Zhymani Smith and Malia Bullock tied for the team-high of 11 points. Smith's seven assists led all players, and Bullock pulled down three rebounds. Alayna Day contributed 10 points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals, and Yonique Teynolds and Alexa Osafo-Mensah tied for the team-high of seven rebounds.

The Lions led 15-13 with 1:06 remaining in the opening quarter before scoring consecutive baskets inside the final 56 seconds (one by Smith and another by Sierra Georges) to take a 19-13 advantage after 10 minutes of action. Bryn Athyn rattled off six straight points to begin the second to balloon its lead to 12, 25-13.

Medgar Evers responded to the Lions' aforementioned surge with a push of its down, going on an 8-3 run over a span of 2:26 to close to within seven, 28-21, with 4:34 remaining in the half. Quezada and Haggins scored four points apiece during that stretch.

The pendulum then swung towards the hosts, as the Lions outscored the Cougars 8-1 over the final 4:34 of the half to take a sizeable 36-22 edge into the locker room at halftime. During that span, Medgar Evers did not connect on a field goal, going 0-for-3.

In what was a very low-scoring third quarter, Bryn Athyn outscored the Cougars 9-5 and took a 45-27 advantage after three periods. The Lions' biggest lead in the aforementioned quarter was 19 points.

Medgar Evers did close to within 13 points down with 5:56 remaining in the fourth quarter following a pair of converted Quezada free throws, but the Lions outscored the visitors 8-6 down the stretch to account for the 15-point victory (56-41).

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, with Bryn Athyn converting on 31.7 percent of its attempts from the floor (20-63), and the Cougars earning just a 29.8 percent conversion rate (17-57). The Lions held a slim 40-38 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 16 miscues compared to 19 for the Cougars. Bryn Athyn registered 11 assists, while Medgar Evers had nine, but the Cougars did hold a 4-1 edge in blocked shots.

Medgar Evers will now have six days off before returning to action next Saturday, as the Cougars will play their home opener against the Roadrunners of Ramapo College. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 12:30pm.
