Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball dealt defeat by Roadrunners of Ramapo College in home opener

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost its home opener yesterday afternoon, falling to the Roadrunners of Ramapo College by a score of 59-37. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 0-4 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Roadrunners grabbed their first victory of the year, improving to 1-5.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, junior Sheily Quezada (7-10 FT) posted her third double-double of the season, scoring 11 points while posting game-highs of 12 points and three blocked shots. She also sprinkled in a pair of assists, as well. Aaliyah Lyons connected on all four of her attempts from the line, finalizing her afternoon with nine points, a game-high five steals, and three rebounds, and Alexis Davis added six points, five boards, a pair of assists, and two swatted shots.

Pacing Ramapo College was Damiya Graham, as she scored a game-high 15 points while grabbing four rebounds and tying for the team-best of four steals. Alison Ahern nearly posted a double-double, netting 12 points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds, and Jocelyn Huancaya scored nine points while collecting eight boards.

In a first quarter dominated by Ramapo, the Roadrunners raced out to a 13-0 advantage just 5:52 into the period. Lauren Flatt accounted for six of those opening 13 points for the visitors. Ramapo led 18-5 after a quarter, a period in which the Cougars shot 0-for-17 from the floor.

Alexis Davis spearheaded a 6-2 run for the Cougars to begin the second quarter, pulling Medgar Evers to within nine (20-11) with 6:28 remaining in the half. The Roadrunners responded with a 9-5 spurt to close the half, taking a 29-16 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Quezada and Davis each converted on a jumper inside the opening 55 seconds of the third quarter to pull the Cougars to within nine again (29-20), and a pair of made freebees by Quezada with just under eight minutes left in the period brought Medgar Evers to within seven, 29-22. Ramapo struck back with a 7-1 run to once again snatch a 13-point edge (36-23), and the Roadrunners eventually held a 40-27 advantage heading into the fourth.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, Medgar Evers never got closer than 13 points down over the final 10 minutes of action, and Ramapo's 22-point margin of victory turned out to be its largest lead of the afternoon.

Neither squad shot well from the field, with Ramapo converting on 33.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (18-54), and Medgar Evers hitting just 10 of its 51 attempts (19.6 percent). The Roadrunners held a slim 44-41 edge on the glass, while also registering 12 steals to the Cougars' 10. Medgar Evers held a 6-2 advantage in blocked shots, but Ramapo won the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues, while the hosts had 26.

Medgar Evers will now have an extended break before returning to the court on Friday evening, December 6, as the Cougars will open up CUNYAC action by hosting the Beavers of CCNY. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 5:00pm.
