Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars dominate Beavers in all facets, defeating CCNY 75-32 to earn first victory of '24-'25

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team opened up CUNYAC action in impressive fashion, blowing out the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 75-32 on Friday evening. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers improved to a mark of 1-4 on the 2024-2025 campaign (1-0 CUNYAC), while CCNY dipped to 0-3 (0-1 CUNYAC).

Pacing the Cougars was veteran guard Jennifer Metra, as she scored a game-high 21 points (9-10 FT) to go along with nine rebounds. Her five assists also led all players. Aaliyah Lyons (6-12 FG) finalized her evening with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, and newcomer Alexis Davis posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Like Davis, Quezada posted a double-double, connecting on five of her eight shot attempts to finish with 11 points, 14 rebounds, a game-high three blocks, two steals, and two assists, and it was Britonya Lloyd contributing three points, six boards, and three assists.

The Beavers' Kasia Morrison and Ashley Suberi tied for the team-high of six points. Morrison's four steals led all players, and her four assists were a team-best. Subervi's five rebounds led all CCNY players.

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 50 seconds, Medgar Evers used an 11-0 run (featuring four points by Metra, three from Lyons, and two apiece by Davis and Nana Samke) over a span of 3:18 to take an 11-2 edge.

The Beavers kept it close, scoring eight of the ensuing 13 points to pull to within six, 16-10, but the Cougars closed the quarter with a converted jumper by Davis, and a made layup by Davis, to take a 20-10 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

Medgar Evers dominated the second quarter, outscoring the visitors by a count of 30-6. Lyons scored eight points in the quarter, while Metra had seven. While the Cougars' offensive showcase in the quarter was impressive, its defense was equally as potent, as CCNY managed just two converted field goals in the period, including just one in the final 5:58 before halftime. At the break, Medgar Evers held a commanding 50-16 advantage.

Over a span of 2:19 to start the third quarter, Medgar Evers netted seven consecutive points to snatch a 41-point lead, 57-16. The Cougars' lead grew to as many as 49 points, before the hosts took a 68-21 advantage into the fourth quarter. In a low-scoring fourth, CCNY outscored the hosts 11-7, but the battle was already won for the Cougars, as Medgar Evers went on to win the game 75-42.

The Cougars earned a 39.1 percent conversion rate for the evening (27-69), while the visiting Beavers connected on just 12 of 68 shot attempts (17.6 percent). Medgar Evers doubled CCNY in the rebounding column, with the Cougars snatching 70 caroms to the Beavers' 35, and the hosts earned 17 assists to the Beavers' 11. Both squads had 23 turnovers, and each team also swatted six shots. CCNY held a slim 10-8 edge in the steals department.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, December 13, as the Cougars will welcome Houghton University to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:30pm.
