Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Unblemished Highlanders use three-point barrage to put away Cougars in non-conference action

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a non-conference defeat on Friday evening in the last contest of calendar year 2024, falling to the Highlanders of Houghton University by a score of 73-50. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 1-5 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Highlanders remained unblemished at 8-0.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, junior standout Sheily Quezada led the way with game-highs of 21 points and four blocked shots. She also collected seven rebounds and swiped three steals. Newcomer Alexis Davis netted 18 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and tallying two steals, and Jennifer Metra contributed four points, six rebounds, and a game-high five steals.

Houghton University drained 14 triples on the evening, while also grabbing a whopping 15 offensive rebounds. Those two aforementioned factors contributed heavily in the team's victory.

Anna Dening connected on six three-point shots, finishing with a team-best 18 points while collecting five rebounds, and Kayla Camacho contributed 16 points, six boards, and four assists. Crysta LaCrosse added nine points, a game-high seven assists, and four rebounds, and Tabitha DeVries finished with eight points on the evening.

Leading 5-2 in the opening 1:42 of the contest, the Highlanders drilled consecutive triples (one apiece by LaCrosse and Abby Guiher) to snatch an 11-2 advantage. Houghton went up by as many as 13 points in the opening quarter (19-6) before taking a 19-9 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

A converted layup by Quezada inched Medgar Evers to within eight (21-13) with 7:33 remaining before halftime, but a ferocious 12-3 run by the visitors over a span of 3:27 gave the Highlanders a commanding 33-15 lead. Medgar Evers scrapped to try to stay in the game, outscoring Houghton 9-4 (thanks to scoring contributions from five different players) to pull to within 13 (37-24), but the Highlanders' Camaco drained a triple before the buzzer as Houghton grabbed a 40-24 edge at the break.

In the third quarter, it was all Houghton University, as the Highlanders outscored Medgar Evers 22-11, and headed into the final period with a 62-35 advantage. Houghton led by as many as 29 in the fourth, but Medgar Evers continued to battle, pulling to within 20 (68-48) following Davis' converted layup with 3:25 remaining. Unfortunately for the Cougars, that would be the final bucket they would get for the evening, as the Highlanders went on to secure the triumph, 73-50.

Both teams shot under 35 percent on the evening, with Houghton converting on 34.8 percent of their attempts (24-69), and Medgar Evers draining 17 of their 64 shots (26.6 percent). The difference in the game came from beyond-the-arc, as the Highlanders drilled 14 triples, while the Cougars were 0-for-9 from downtown. Houghton held a 53-40 edge on the glass, while also doubling Medgar Evers in assists (22-11). The Cougars did hold advantages in steals (12-5) and swatted shots (8-5).

The Cougars will now have an extended break, as the team will have 21 days off before returning to the court on Saturday, January 4, as Medgar Evers will take to the road to battle Manhattanville University at the Kennedy Gymnasium (Purchase, NY). Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
