Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball struggles offensively in loss to non-conference foe Manhattanville University

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost its first game of calendar year 2025 this past Saturday, falling to the Valiants of Manhattanville by a score of 65-36. The non-conference clash took place at Kennedy Gym in Purchase, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 1-6 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Valiants improved to a mark of 7-3.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, junior standout Sheily Quezada scored a team-high 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds and leading all players with seven swatted shots. Aaliyah Lyons contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and newcomer Alexis Davis added eight points.

For Manhattanville, Julie Debrocky paced her squad, scoring a game-high 18 points while drilling four treys in the process. She also snatched seven boards, swiped three steals, and added a pair of assists. Kathleen O'Mara scored 10 points, collected five rebounds, registered five steals, and blocked two shots, and Madison Carlo finished with six points. Esther Ramos' 10 rebounds were a game-high, and Gabby Tucker's seven steals led all players.

Medgar Evers opened the scoring six seconds into the game on Quezada's drained jumper, but the Valiants dominated the action from that point forward. Manhattanville shot 40 percent in the opening period, and used runs of 7-0 and 8-0 to open up a 19-8 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

Manhattanville held a 26-8 edge with 4:36 remaining in the half before the Cougars used a 7-1 run to slice their deficit to 12 (27-15) with 2:00 left. Quezada, Jennifer Metra, and Nana Samake each earned a bucket during that aforementioned run. The Valiants would respond in a big way, however, closing the quarter on a ferocious 14-0 run (highlighted by three-point baskets by Cascia Sandoval and Debrocky) to take a commanding 41-15 edge into the locker room at halftime.

With a comfortable lead at its disposable, the Valiants were able to maintain their advantage, outscoring Medgar Evers 24-21 in the second half to wrap up the game. Seven different Manhattanville players recorded a field goal over the closing 20 minutes, with Debrocky's seven points leading the second-half scoring.

Neither team was very accurate shooting the basketball, with Medgar Evers converting on just 29.6 percent of its shots (16-54), and the Valiants earning a conversion rate of 28.9 percent (22-76). The Cougars held a 53-49 edge on the glass, but the Valiants registered 29 compared to 11 for the hosts. Manhattanville held a 17-8 advantage in assists, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues to the Cougars' 40.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the Hunter Sportsplex to clash with the Hawks in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
