Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars put forth gritty effort, but Hawks pull away in second half of CUNYAC clash

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team was defeated in CUNYAC action last night, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 79-53. The contest took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 1-7 on the 2024-2025 campaign (1-1 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 7-4 (2-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, standout Sheily Quezada posted yet another double-double, registering a team-high 17 points, along with game-highs of 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. She also added three steals. Alexis Davis connected on six of her eight attempts from the floor, finishing with 14 points and four boards, and Aaliyah Lyons finalized her evening with 11 points, four assists, four caroms, and three steals. Finally, Jennifer Metra's four steals on the evening led all players.

Hunter College was paced by the dynamic Alexa Charles, as she converted on nine of her 14 attempts from the floor, finishing with a game-high of 24 points. Her 10 rebounds and three steals were team-bests, and her six assists led all players. Kimberly Lau and Katie Burke scored 11 points apiece, with Lau adding six rebounds and four assists, and Burke pulling down four rebounds. Finally, it was Erin Cosio and Makkedah Murray netting nine points apiece.

The Hawks raced out to an early 10-0 advantage just 3:38 into the contest, highlighted by Burke's five points. After a bucket by Lyons got the Cougars on the board, Hunter responded with another five points, courtesy of a pair of converted free throws and a drained trifecta by Lau. That pushed the Hawks' early edge to 13 (15-2). Hunter led by as many as 16 in the opening quarter (20-4), but Medgar Evers closed the gap to 10, finishing the period on a 9-4 run to close to within 23-13. Davis netted four points during that aforementioned spurt, while Quezada earned three.

In what was a low-scoring second quarter, the teams combined for just 22 points. The Cougars continued to push during the opening six minutes of the second quarter, eventually slicing Hunter's lead to just five (25-20) following Davis' fastbreak layup. A 12-1 run by the hosts over the final 3:52 of the half ballooned the Hawks' lead back up to 16, 37-21, as the teams headed into the locker room. Murray scored five points during that late second quarter push.

Baskets by Quezada and Davis to start the third quarter brought Medgar Evers to within 12, but that is the closest Medgar Evers would get during the period, as Hunter gradually built its advantage, outscoring the Cougars 23-18 and taking a 21-point edge (60-39) after 30 minutes of action. Hunter continued to pour it on in the fourth, going up by as many as 29 (78-49), before winning the game comfortably by 26.

The teams nearly shot identically from the floor for the evening, with the Cougars earning a conversion rate of 38.5 percent (20-52), and the Hawks shooting just a cut below, hitting on 23 of 60 attempts (38.3 percent). The CUNAYC foes pulled down 38 rebounds apiece, but Hunter won the turnover battle, committing just 20 miscues compared to 31 for the visitors. Medgar Evers held 14-12 advantage in steals, though the Hawks dished 20 assists on the evening to the Cougars' 13.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back this Friday evening, as the team returns to the friendly confines of the Cougars Cave to take on York College in another CUNYAC confrontation. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
