Alexis Davis scores 16 points, grabs 13 rebounds as Cougars dominate Cardinals, 53-36

Box Score The Medgar Evers women's basketball team picked up a crucial victory on Friday evening, defeating the Cardinals of York College in a classic CUNYAC game by a score of 53-36. With the win, the Cougars improved to 2-7 on the 2024-2025 campaign (2-1 CUNYAC), while York dipped to a mark of 0-9 on the season (0-3 CUNYAC).

In the victory for the Cougars, newcomer Alexis Davis put forth a hearty effort, posting team-highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. She also added three assists, as well. Sheily Quezada posted her sixth double-double of the 2024-2025 campaign, scoring 12 points, snatching 11 boards, swatting eight shots, and dishing four assists, and Aaliyah Lyons netted eight points, dished a game-high five assists, and grabbed five rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Cardinals, Alicia Gumbs scored a game-high 26 points, collected eight rebounds, recorded two assists, and swiped two steals. In addition, Madison Plaza scored eight points, grabbed three boards, and dished three assists, and Beautifull Earth's 14 rebounds and five steals were both game-highs.

Both teams struggled in the opening half, combining for just 32 points, as the Cougars headed into the locker room with a 22-10 advantage. Medgar Evers shot just 29.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes (10-34), while York College hit on just four of 35 attempts (11.4 percent). Quezada contributed eight points in the opening session with Davis accounting for six points.

Medgar Evers broke the CUNYAC clash open in the third quarter, outscoring York 27-8 over a 10-minute span. The quarter was highlighted by Davis, as she netted eight points during the period.

With the contest well in hand for the hosts, York College outscored Medgar Evers by a count of 18-4 in the fourth, but the Cougars still won the game convincingly, by 17 points.

Medgar Evers was the far more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Cougars converted on 36.9 percent of their shots (24-65), while the Cardinals connecting on just 12 of 66 attempts (18.2 percent). The Cougars held a 55-47 advantage on the glass, while also dishing 20 assists to York's six. Medgar Evers totaled 10 blocks, while the Cardinals had two, and each team swiped 10 steals. York won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues, while the Cougars finished with 20.

Medgar Evers will look to carry the momentum of this victory into Wednesday evening's game, as the Cougars will welcome Lehman College to the Cougars Cave for another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
