Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars lose non-conference games to Scranton University and Bryn Athyn to open 2024-2025 season

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped two games this weekend to begin its 2024-2025 campaign, falling to Scranton University (91-47) and Bryn Athyn (71-64) as part of the Hilton Scranton Invitational, hosted by Scranton University. The Cougars are 0-2 to open up the year, while Bryn Athyn is 1-1, and the Royals are 2-0.

Despite the Cougars' loss to the Royals, Medgar Evers was paced by newcomer Daniel McCollum, as he connected on four of his nine attempts from the floor, scoring a team-best 10 points. He also snatched three rebounds, as well. Senior Andre Evans Jr. (4-6 FT) netted eight points while collecting three boards, and Ryan Panagakos and Christian Moran contributed six points apiece.

The University of Scranton's Jon Spatola and Will McLoughlin tied for the game-high of 16 points. Spataola also swiped a game-high seven steals, while tying all players with six rebounds, and McLoughlin snatched four boards. Cameron Khoza netted seven points, and Teddy Spratt's four assists led all players.

The Royals jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first half, paced by Spatola. Scranton ended the half with a three-pointer scored by Khoza, giving the Royals a 22-point lead heading into the locker room.

The University of Scranton kept the momentum going in the second half, rattling off 16 consecutive points to take a 55-20 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Max Lebisky scored a fast break layup and converted the and-one play to push the Royals lead to 63-29 with 7:59 remaining. The hosts continued to gradually build their lead, eventually going on to win the contest by 44.

Shooting efficiency was a primary factor in this contest, as the Royals drained 57.4 percent of their shots (35-61), while the Cougars converted on just 30.2 percent of theirs (16-53). The University of Scranton held a modest 41-34 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle by committing just 15 miscues to Medgar's 22.

Joash Beaton led the way for the Cougars in their tough loss to Lions, as he scored a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Panagakos netted 12 points while snatching three boards, and McCollum added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Senior Joshua Jean Pierre scored seven points, tied for the game-high eight boards, and swiped two steals.

Bryn Athyn's Will Little played sensationally in the Lions' victory, as he connected on nine of his 15 attempts from the floor on his way to scoring a game-high 21 points. He also collected seven boards, as well. Jakir Hampton netted 17 points while grabbing two rebounds and dishing two assists, and Jalen Jackson added 15 points, eight boards, and three assists.

Medgar Evers fell behind in the first half by scores of 8-0, 19-4, and 36-22 in the first half, before heading into the locker room trailing by
11 points, 38-27.

The Cougars opened the second half with consecutive baskets by Jean Pierre and McCollum to close the gap to seven (38-31), but the Lions spent the next 8:06 outscoring Medgar Evers 17-11 to take a commanding 55-42 edge with 8:49 left.

Refusing to go down quietly, Medgar Evers went on an 8-0 run over a span of 73 seconds to inch to within five (55-50). A bucket by McCollum, and two trifectas by Joash accounted for the Cougars points during that run. Over the final 8:36 of the game, however, Medgar Evers converted on just three field goals, and Bryn Athyn connected on eight of 10 shots from the free throw line to put the game away and win it, 71-64.

The Lions connected on 24 of their 59 shots from the floor (40.7 percent), while Medgar Evers converted on 33.9 percent (21-62). Bryn Athyn held a 43-39 edge on the glass, and each team committed 17 turnovers.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY to battle SUNY Maritime in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
