Men's basketball unable to overcome Privateers' hot shooting (54.5 percent) in loss to SUNY Maritime

The Cougars' men's basketball team is still searching for its first victory on the 2024-2025 campaign, losing last night to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 96-64. The contest took place at the Riesenberg Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 0-3 on the season, while SUNY Maritime improved to 2-0.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, senior Ryan Panagakos connected on three shots from downtown, and six of his seven shots from the line, finishing with a team-high 17 points. He also snatched three rebounds, as well. Daniel McCollum added nine points, three boards, and a pair of steals, and guard Andre Evans Jr. registered eight points, a game-high six steals, four boards, and three assists.

SUNY Maritime was paced by Jake Murphy, as he connected on all nine of his attempts from the floor, including the four launches from three-point territory, to finish with a game-high 22 points. Jake Devaney added 13 points, seven boards, three steals, and two swatted shots, and James O'Connell finalized his evening with 10 points. Theo Noble, Tyler Anderson, and Spiro Venetis finished with nine points apiece.

Medgar Evers kept the game close in the opening minutes, with Panagakos' three-point conversion pulling the visitors to within two (8-6) just 2:39 into the contest. It was all Privateers from there, though. SUNY Maritime The Privateers led 12-8 when back-to-back O'Connell buckets spearheaded a 17-5 run that extended the Maritime's lead to 16, 29-13, midway through the first half. 

The Privateers continued to build their lead, going up by 30 points at 49-19, before eventually taking a commanding 53-27 edge into the locker room at halftime.  In the first half, the hosts connected on 9-for-14 from three-point range.

After a Devaney converted on a jumper with 17:16 left to give Maritime a 63-31 advantage, the Cougars made a modest push, going on a 12-4 run, highlighted by Michael Perez's four points and McCollum's three, to pull to within 24, 67-43. responded with five consecutive points, however, putting the Privateers up 29, 72-43. From there, the hosts would go up by as many as 35, and eventually advanced to win the contest by 32 (96-64).

The Privateers connected on 36 of their 66 attempts from the floor for the evening (54.5 percent), while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 37.7 percent (23-61). SUNY Maritime held a 43-34 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while the visitors had 21. SUNY Maritime earned assists on 75 percent of their field goal makes (27 of 36), while the Cougars earned 10 for the night.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to the Pit in Phoenixville, PA to take on the University of Valley Forge. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
