Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball edged by St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 66-62, in entertaining game at Cougars Cave

In what was a very entertaining game on Tuesday evening, the Cougars' men's basketball team suffered a tough defeat, falling to the Bears of St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) by a score of 66-62. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 0-6 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Bears improved to a mark of 2-4.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, newcomer Daniel McCollum paced the hosts, as he finished with a team-high 14 points (3-3 FT). Senior Andre Evans Jr. netted 12 points while dishing a game-best eight assists and snatching five rebounds, and Ryan Panagakos (4-9 FG) finalized his evening with 10 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Finally, it was Christian Moran and Joshua Jean Pierre finishing with eight points apiece, with Moran's nine rebounds a team-high. Pierre also contributed seven boards on the night.

The Bears were led by the hot shooting of Collin Mills, as the standout connected on eight of his first 11 attempts from the floor (9-16 for the evening), and five trifectas, to finish with a game-high 27 points. He also added three dimes while swiping three steals. Chris Williams connected on four launches from three-point territory, finalizing his night with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Justin Nazon added seven points, eight rebounds, and a team-high seven assists, and Adam Jasaraj's 10 boards led all players.

Trailing 23-12 in the opening 5:35 of action, Medgar Evers put together a 7-0 run over a span of 3:22 to slice the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) advantage to four points (23-19) with 11:03 left in the half. That aforementioned run featured a converted free throw by Pierre, a made layup by Evans Jr., and a converted trifecta by Moran. The Bears then responded by scoring 11 of the next 16 points to snatch a 34-24 advantage with just another five minutes remaining in the session (4:57).

Medgar Evers' defense tightened down the stretch of the half, as the Cougars didn't allow any more Bears points over the final 4:57 of the stanza. While doing so, Medgar put together a ferocious 9-0 run to cut its deficit to one (34-33) as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime. That 9-0 spurt was highlighted by McCollum's four points (a converted layup and two made free throws).

The Cougars scored the first six points of the second half, and, dating back to the latter stages of the first, Medgar Evers was in the midst of a 15-0 run. St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) would strike back, though, as Mills drained a triple, and that was followed by a made layup by Jasaraj, as the game was tied at 39 apiece with 16:35 remaining.

Over the course of the ensuing 6:33, the teams went back and forth, with neither squad taking a lead greater than four points until Mills swished a trifecta with 10:02 left to put the Bears ahead 55-50. St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) later led 56-50, but the Cougars drained consecutive threes (one by Moran, and the other by McCollum) to knot the game at 56-all with 6:11 left.

The Bears then put together a 7-0 run (courtesy of five points by Nazon, and two from Mills) over the ensuing 2:04 to take a 63-56. From there, the Cougars would get within three points multiple times (63-60 and 65-62), but that is the closest Medgar Evers would inch, as the visitors held on for a 66-62 triumph.

The Cougars connected on 40 percent of their attempts for the evening (22-55), while also draining 76.9 percent of their freebees (10-13). On the flip side, the visitors won the contest despite struggling shooting the basketball, as St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) earned a conversion rate of just 31.8 percent (21-66), while also misfiring on eight free throws (14-for-22, 63.6 percent).

The hosts dominated the glass, snatching 48 boards compared to 34 for the Bears, and the Cougars also held a 20-18 edge in assists. St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) won the turnover battle by a wide margin, committing just seven miscues, while the hosts had triple that (21).

Medgar Evers will now break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars will play another non-conference game against a team from Brooklyn (Pratt Institute). Game-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
