Balanced effort helps Cougars secure first victory of 2024-2025 campaign with 70-49 rout of Cannoneers

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team picked up its first victory of this 2024-2025 campaign, earlier this evening defeating the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute by a score of 70-49. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers is now 1-6 on the season, while Pratt Institute dipped to 0-8.

Senior guard Andre Evans Jr. put forth a tremendous effort for the hosts, registering game-highs of 14 points (6-10 FG), six assists, and six steals. He also grabbed three rebounds on the night. Joash Beaton contributed 13 points, three boards, and a pair of assists, and Ryan Panagakos finalized his evening with 12 points, six boards, and three dimes. Daniel McCollum and Nicholas Bocharov scored seven points apiece, and Joshua Jean Pierre's 10 rebounds led all players.

For the Cannoneers, Cameron Windt converted on three triples, scoring a team-high 10 points. Ace Bibbs contributed eight points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Justin Caver and Mekhi Davis netted seven points apiece.

Trailing 12-5 just 4:01 into the game, the Cougars scored seven consecutive points over a span of 3:39 to knot the contest at 12 apiece. Evans Jr. accounted for four points during that aforementioned spurt. After Pratt's Hursh Mehta drained a triple to give the visitors a 15-12 edge, the Cougars outscored the Cannoneers 26-5 over the final 11:57 of the half to take a commanding 38-20 edge into the locker room. Pratt connected on just one field goal inside the final 11:57 of the opening session.

The hosts took their largest lead, a 22-point advantage, with 18:43 remaining in the game following a converted layup by Evans Jr. A 14-4 run by Pratt sliced the Cougars' lead to 12, 46-34, with 13:40 to go. Following that aforementioned last-ditch comeback attempt by the Cannoneers, the Cougars took control, outscoring the visitors 24-15 the rest of the way to account for the impressive 21-point triumph.

Medgar Evers was the much more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Cougars converted on 43.3 percent of their attempts from the floor (26-60), while Pratt earned a 25.7 percent conversion rate (18-70). Medgar Evers held a slim 47-45 edge on the glass, while also tallying nine steals to the Cannoneers' eight. The Cougars earned 16 assists on the evening, while Pratt finished with 13, and Medgar committed just 13 turnovers, while the Cannoneers had one more (14) than the hosts.

With their first victory under their belt, the Cougars will look to keep the ball rolling this Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will host the City College of New York in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
