Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars' hearty effort against CUNYAC foe CCNY falls short as Beavers claim 76-68 victory

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team put forth a hearty effort on Friday evening, pushing CCNY to its limits but ultimately falling short, losing a CUNYAC game to the Beavers by a score of 76-68. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to a mark of 1-7 on the 2024-2025 campaign (0-1 CUNYAC), while CCNY improved to 4-2 (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the defeat, newcomer Joash Beaton put forth a fantastic game for the hosts, scoring a game-high 24 points (8-15 FG, 5-6 FT) while snatching three rebounds. Ryan Panagakos converted on five of his seven free throw attempts, finalizing his evening with 12 points and five rebounds, and senior Andre Evans Jr. added 11 points, game-highs of eight steals and five assists, and five rebounds. Finally, it was Joshua Jean Pierre finishing with seven points and a team-best eight boards.

In the victory for CCNY, four Beavers scored in double figures, including Justin Morety (7-14 FG, 8-9 FT), as he scored a team-high 22 points while also collecting eight rebounds and dishing five assists. Michael Bowman (6-10 FG, 4-8 3PT FG) netted 16 points while snatching four boards, and Ricardo Dixon posted a double-double, scoring 15 points and collecting 10 boards while swiping two steals and adding a pair of assists. Finally, it was Elijah Patterson scoring 10 points and adding eight rebounds.

Trailing 43-24 with 1:13 remaining in the first half, Medgar Evers closed the session strong, rattling off six consecutive points before the buzzer sounded to pull to within 13, 43-30, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime. That aforementioned spurt featured a converted freebee by Panagakos, a made jumper by Evans Jr., and four straight points by Beaton.

The Beavers scored four of the opening six points in the second session to go up 47-32, but an 8-0 Medgar Evers run (highlighted by consecutive triples and a layup by Beaton) brought the hosts to within seven (47-40). The Cougars continued to chip away, inching as close as four points down on a pair of occasions (49-45 and 51-47), but CCNY then outscored the Cougars 20-13 over a span of 9:37 to take a seemingly comfortable 11-point edge (71-60) with just under four minutes left on the clock.

Medgar Evers, just as it did most of the evening, continued to battle, going on a ferocious 7-1 over a period of 2:39 to close to within five (72-67). Ahmed Toure scored four points during that stretch, with Beaton capping the run by converting a layup. CCNY would eventually hold off the hosts, however, nailing four of six free throws down the stretch, and holding the Cougars without a converted field goal the rest of the way before going on to claim victory, 76-68.

CCNY was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Beavers connected on 46.4 percent of their attempts from the floor (26-56), while the Cougars earned a 30.8 percent conversion rate (20-65). CCNY held a slim 47-43 edge on the glass, while also registering 17 assists compared to 12 for the hosts. Medgar Evers swiped 12 steals on the evening to the Beavers' seven, and both teams took care of the basketball well, with the Cougars committing just nine turnovers, and CCNY 14.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon, as it welcomes Manhattanville University to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
