Chargers down Cougars 68-49 in consolation game of Dr. Carol V. De Costa / Go 4 the Goal Tournament

The Cougars' men's basketball team suffered a loss on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Chargers of Colby Sawyer by a score of 68-49 in the consolation game of the Fifth Annual Dr. Carol V. De Costa / Go 4 the Goal Tournament. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 2-9 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Chargers improved to that same aforementioned mark of 2-9.

SUNY Polytechnic won the tournament, defeating SUNY Old Westbury in the championship game by a score of 83-71. The Wildcats' Daimarr Miller was tabbed the Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Anthony Rose was named to the All-Tournament team. Other All-Tournament honorees included the Panthers' Amadi Lee-Kane, the Chargers' A.J. Mutiganzi, and Medgar Evers' Ahmed Toure.

In the Cougars' loss to Colby Sawyer, senior guard Andre Evans Jr. moved into second place on the institution's all-time steals list. surpassing Winston Douglas (2009-2013) by recording three steals. Also, Ryan Panagakos and Daniel McCollum tied for the team-high of 10 points. Omari Hinds contributed six points and four rebounds, and Toure's seven rebounds were a team-best. 

Three players scored in double figures for the Chargers, including Cha'Mar Martin, as he scored a game-high 13 points while snatching seven rebounds and swiping a pair of steals. Sean Peterson registered a double-double with 13 points and a game-best 14 boards, and Bryson Jenkins added 12 points.

In what was a tightly-contested opening half, neither team led by more than seven points. Colby Sawyer held a six-point edge (31-25) following a pair of converted freebees by Sadiq Abdullahi, but Medgar Evers closed the gap to two prior to the buzzer when Hinds drained two free throws, and Evans added a layup. After 20 minutes of action, the Chargers were clinging to a slim 31-29 advantage.

Colby Sawyer scored the opening seven points of the second session (courtesy of a converted triple by Martin, a pair of free throws by Logan Lapierre Cassie, and a made layup by Peterson) to push its lead to nine, 38-29, with 15:59 remaining. A modest 10-5 run by Medgar Evers brought the hosts to within four (43-39) with 12:26 to go, but the Cougars would manage just one converted field goal over the ensuing 6:31, and the Chargers opened up a 56-43 advantage before Medgar Evers' next hoop at 5:54 (Panagakos).

Holding an 11-point lead (56-45), Colby Sawyer outscored Medgar Evers 12-4 the rest of the way to solidify a victory in the consolation contest.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with the Chargers connecting on 24 of their 65 attempts on the afternoon (36.9 percent), and the Cougars draining just 20 shots total (20-61, 32.8 percent). Colby Sawyer dominated the glass (53-35), while also holding a slim edge in assists (18-16). The Cougars earned 12 steals compared to eight for the visitors, and Medgar Evers won the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues while Colby Sawyer finished with 20.

The Cougars will wrap-up their eight-game homestand on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Fitchburg State College. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
