Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Medgar Evers outlasted by Fitchburg State, 85-73, in non-conference clash at Cougars Cave

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team lost a non-conference game in its first contest in calendar year 2025, falling to the Falcons of Fitchburg State by a score of 85-73. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to a mark of 2-10 on the season, while Fitchburg State improved to 2-9.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Daniel McCollum led his squad with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Ahmed Toure, fresh off of earning All-Tournament honors at the Dr. Carol V. De Costa / Go 4 the Goal Tournament, recorded a double-double, netting 17 points and posting game-highs of 11 rebounds and three blocks, and Ryan Panagakos finalized his evening with 13 points. Joash Beaton scored nine points and collected five boards, and Andre Evans Jr. registered game-highs of seven assists and five steals.

For Fitchburg State, Matthew Drayton's 21 points led all players. He connected on four shots from downtown, while also registering three assists. Duvall Price and Jalen Jackson contributed 14 points apiece, with Price snatching seven rebounds, recording four assists, and blocking two shots, and Jackson adding three rebounds and three assists. Finally, it was Joshua Jean Charles scored eight points and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

Beaton scored seven points in 93 seconds to start the game to give Medgar Evers an early 7-0 advantage. The Cougars held multiple seven-point advantages over the course of the opening stanza, before the Falcons finally took the lead, 37-36, on a converted triple by Nicholas Van Zboray with 1:44 left. Fitchburg State then continued to add to its advantage before halftime, scoring the next six points to take a 43-36 edge into the break.

The Cougars scored first coming out of the locker room when Panagakos drained a trifecta to slice Fitchburg State's lead to four (43-39), but the Falcons responded with six straight points to take its biggest lead of the clash – a 10-point edge (49-39). The pendulum then swung towards Medgar Evers, as the Cougars rattled off five straight (courtesy of a bucket by Jackson Bartley, and a three-point hoop by McCollum) to pull to within 49-44 with 15:59 remaining.

Over the ensuing 4:03, Fitchburg State used a 15-3 run to put some distance between itself and Medgar Evers, stretching its advantage to 17 (64-47). Nate Semedo Raynham led the way during that charge with five points, while Jeremiah Simeon and Charles added four apiece.

Despite being down 17, Medgar Evers refused to go quietly, outscoring the Falcons 18-7 over a span of 6:53 to inch to within six (71-65). McCollum netted the first six points of that run, with Trevon Tcha adding four. Unfortunately for Medgar Evers, that would be as close as it would draw, as Fitchburg State would hold on, going on to win the game by a score of 85-73.

The Falcons were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, connecting on 49.3 percent of their shots from the floor (34-69), while the Cougars converted on 28 of 72 attempts (38.9 percent). Fitchburg State held a 50-39 edge on the glass, while also dishing 27 assists to Medgar Evers' 20. Medgar Evers did win the turnover battle, committing just 13 miscues compared to the visitors' 20, and the Cougars held an 8-5 advantage in steals. Finally, the Falcons registered five swatted shots to the hosts' three.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the team will travel to the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness Events Center in Newark, NJ to battle New Jersey Institute of Technology. The contest will serve as an exhibition for the Cougars, and a regular season contest to the Highlanders. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
