Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars defeated by NCAA Division I member NJIT at Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness Events Center

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped an exhibition game this past Saturday, falling to NCAA Division I member New Jersey Institute of Technology by a score of 107-51. The game took place at the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness Events Center in Newark, NJ. The game did not count towards the Cougars' overall record, but the Highlanders improved to a mark of 3-12 with the victory.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jonathan Grimsley played well in his return to the institution's basketball program, as he connected on 11 of his 25 attempts from the floor, finishing with a game-high 27 points while also grabbing six rebounds. In addition, it was Joash Beaton scoring in double figures, as he added 10 points, two rebounds, and a pair of steals.

Six players scored in double figures for NJIT, including Quentin Duncan, as he connected on eight triples, finishing with a team-high 26 points. He also snatched six rebounds and added a pair of assists. Tim Moore (17 points, 10 rebounds), Ari Fulton (14 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks), and Sebastian Robinson (12 points, game-high 15 assists, seven rebounds) all posted double-doubles, and John Kelly and Malachi Arrington scored 10 points apiece.

A converted jumper by Beaton 1:47 into the game gave the Cougars a 4-3 advantage, but it was all Highlanders from there. NJIT took the lead for good (6-4) via a converted layup by Fulton. That spearheaded a ferocious 23-2 run by the hosts, as NJIT opened up a commanding 27-6 advantage with 9:37 remaining in the half. Arrington scored six points during that aforementioned run for the Highlanders.

NJIT would eventually snatch a 35-9 advantage, but eight consecutive points by Medgar Evers (highlighted by six points from Grimsley) brought the Cougars to within 18 (35-17) with 5:11 left in the half. Medgar Evers inch as close as to within 17 (39-22) before the Highlanders finished the session with a 13-5 spurt to take a 52-27 edge into the locker room at halftime.

A strong second half from NJIT, in which the Highlanders shot 54 percent from the field and connected on nine 3-pointers, helped grow the lead even more. The Highlanders held a commanding 77-46 edge with 10:00 remaining in the game before finishing the contest on a 30-5 run to account for the 56-point blowout victory (107-51).

NJIT converted on 49.4 percent of its shot attempts for the afternoon (41-83), while the Cougars earned a conversion rate of just 29.4 percent (20-68). The Highlanders held a 69-27 edge on the glass, while also dishing 25 assists to Medgar's seven. NJIT swatted 10 shots while the Cougars blocked three, but Medgar Evers did win the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues, while the Highlanders committed 13.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the Hunter Sportsplex to clash with the Hawks in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
