The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped its final home game of the 2023-2024 season on Friday evening, falling to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a very competitive contest by a score of 70-64. The CUNYAC clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-22 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-13 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 7-17 on the year (7-6 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, four players scored in double figures, including freshman Nicholas Guillen, as he scored a team-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Veteran Joshua Jean Pierre registered another double-double, scoring 15 points while snatching a game-high 16 rebounds. Derek Wicker finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists, and Andre Evans Jr. scored 12 points while collecting six rebounds, tallying a team-high three steals, and adding a pair of dimes.

Serge Thraysbule netted 17 points whole tying for the team-high of 11 boards and registering a game-high five steals. He also dished four assists, as well. Finally, it was Malik Dale scoring 17 points while collecting three boards.

In front of a packed and vocal Cougars Cave crowd, Brooklyn College raced out to a 5-0 advantage just 37 seconds into the contest, thanks to a converted bucket by Thraysbule, and a trifecta by Dale. An 8-1 Cougars run over the ensuing 3:35 gave the Cougars an 8-6 advantage. A three-point basket by Guillen, and five consecutive points by Wicker accounted for the points during that spurt.

The next 2:21 of action saw the CUNYAC foes exchange the lead four times, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when Wicker made a layup to put Medgar Evers ahead 12-11 with 14:27 remaining in the opening half. The Cougars held the lead for the next 8:09 of play, until a converted free throw by Dale knotted the game at 24 apiece. Medgar Evers took the lead right back, going up by as many as four (30-26) before a 7-2 run by Brooklyn put the Bulldogs ahead 33-32 with just over a minute remaining before halftime.

Trailing 36-34 in the final seconds of the half, the Cougars' Guillen drew a foul, converting on two free throw attempts to knot the game at 36 apiece. On Brooklyn's final possession of the stanza, Jaden Casanova just missed converting on a triple from 30 feet out, as the buzzer sounded with the game staying tied.

Medgar Evers came out fired up to start the second half, going on a 9-0 run over the opening 2:48 of the session to take a 45-36 advantage. Evans Jr. scored five points during that spurt, with Jean Pierre contributing four. Later, the Cougars held a 51-43 edge with 12:02 remaining, but a converted triple by Thraysbule completely swung the momentum in the Bulldogs' direction. That converted triple started a 17-3 run by Brooklyn over a span of 8:07, as Brooklyn catapulted ahead by a score of 60-54 with 3:55 left.

Down the stretch of the contest, Medgar Evers pulled to within two multiple times, but the last gasp, and the play that essentially clinched the victory for Brooklyn College, came with 17 seconds left. With the Bulldogs leading 66-62 and the Cougars in possession of the basketball, Evans Jr. lost the ball out of bounds in the front court, and the Bulldogs eventually hung on to win by six (70-64).

Neither team shot well from the floor, as the Cougars earned a conversion rate of 39.6 percent (21-53), and the Bulldogs connected on just 33.8 percent of their shots from the floor (25-74). Brooklyn College held a slim 44-41 edge on the glass, while also tallying 17 steals compared to seven for the Cougars. Medgar Evers did tally 14 assists to Brooklyn's 10, and the Cougars held a 5-2 edge in blocks.
