Men's basketball finalizes season with 92-67 loss to CUNYAC rival John Jay; Michael Perez scores 17 points in defeat

Box Score The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team wrapped up its 2023-2024 campaign on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 92-67. The contest took place at the Doghouse in midtown, Manhattan. With the loss, the Cougars finalized the season at 2-23 (0-14 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds capped their year at 7-18 (3-11 CUNYAC).
 
Sharpshooter Michael Perez paced the Cougars with a team-high 17 points (6-14 FG), as he connected on three triples in the process. Perez also snatched six rebounds, tallied six assists, and swiped a pair of steals. Freshman Derek Wicker scored 15 points while snatching a team-best nine boards, and Andre Evans Jr. and Jackson Bartley contributed eight points apiece.
 
Garrison Watkins paced the Bloodhounds with a game-high 30 points, connecting on six triples in the process. His 13 rebounds led all players, and he also added a pair of steals and two dimes. Isaac Holmes scored 14 points while swiping three steals, and Jordan Evelyn narrowly missed registering a double-double, as he scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds, tallied six assists, and contributed three steals. Jamir Stewart (12 points), Daniel Reyes (10 points), and Jeremiah Cardi (10 points) all scored in double figures, as well.
 
John Jay raced out to an early 9-2 advantage in the opening 94 seconds of action as Watkins connected on a triple to give his team that aforementioned seven-point edge. The Bloodhounds later used a 19-9 run to push their lead to 30-13 with 7:32 remaining in the opening half. John Jay outscored Medgar Evers 23-12 for the rest of the session to take a 53-25 edge into the locker room at the break.
 
Opening the half strong, John Jay College put together a 15-5 run over opening five minutes and change to take its biggest advantage of the evening, 68-30. Medgar Evers did show some signs of life immediately following that spurt, as the Cougars used a 16-7 run to slice their deficit to 29, 75-46, with 9:34 remaining in the contest.
 
The Bloodhounds fended off any late surge by the visitors, though, going back up by as many as 35 points on three occasions before winning the CUNYAC clash by 25.

Both teams shot over 40 percent from the floor, with the Bloodhounds earning a 47.6 percent conversion rate (30-63), and Medgar Evers connecting on 26 of its 64 shot attempts (40.6 percent). John Jay dominated the glass, snatching 48 rebounds to Medgar Evers' 30, and the Bloodhounds held a narrow 11-10 advantage in steals. Both squads registered 18 assists, and the Cougars won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues, while John Jay finished with 18.
