Bulldogs defeat Cougars in CUNYAC clash; Seniors Mariame Gueye and Anamaria Dzagnidze honored before contest

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped their final home game of the 2023-2024 season on Friday evening, falling to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College by a score of 75-43. The CUNYAC clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 7-12 on the 2023-2024 campaign (4-9 CUNYAC), while the Bulldogs improved to 15-8 on the year (10-2 CUNYAC).

Prior to the game, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor seniors Mariame Gueye and Anamaria Dzagnidze, commemorating their years of service to the institution's women's basketball program. Head Coach Rodney Carr spoke glowingly about each student-athlete, and both Gueye and Dzagnidze were presented with action shot posters, as well as bouquets of flowers.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, sophomore Sheily Quezada posted yet another double-double, scoring a team-high 15 points while leading all players with 11 rebounds. She also finished with two assists and a pair of swatted shots. Gueye scored nine points, snatched 10 rebounds, and dished three assists, and point guard Jennifer Metra contributed six points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists.

Pacing Brooklyn College was Ericka James, as she finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds, three dimes, and two steals. Dior Dorsey contributed 12 points, a game-high six steals, and five rebounds, and Anna Kitch and Alina Estrella scored nine points apiece. Kitch also snatched a team-high nine rebounds.

Medgar Evers trailed just 18-9 after the first quarter, but Brooklyn College controlled the rest of the game. The Bulldogs started the second quarter on a 14-4 run over the opening 4:18 of the quarter to take a commanding 32-13 advantage. James had eight points during that aforementioned spurt, with Kitch adding four.

The Cougars then scored four straight points, courtesy of two converted freebees by Andecia Liverpool, and a bucket by Gueye, to slice their deficit to 15 (32-17) with 5:12 left in the half. Brooklyn then rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 41-17 lead with 3:55 remaining in the half. Brooklyn continued to build its edge, eventually taking a commanding 50-21 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Brooklyn College continued to roll in the second half of action, going on a 13-2 run to take a 63-23 advantage. The Bulldogs led by 44 points (73-29) after three quarters. Medgar Evers outscored Brooklyn 14-2 in the fourth quarter, highlighted by Quezada's seven points, but the Bulldogs still won the game convincingly, 75-43.

Neither team shot well from the floor, as the Bulldogs earned a conversion rate of 33.7 percent (28-83), and the Cougars connected on just 25 percent of their shots from the floor (17-68). Brooklyn College held a 60-51 edge on the glass, while also dishing 22 assists compared to 10 for the Cougars. The Bulldogs piled 17 steals while Medgar Evers finished with six, and Brooklyn won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues, while the hosts had 23.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will take to the road to battle John Jay College in their regular season CUNYAC finale. Start time for the contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
