Cougars manage just 16 second half points, fall to Bloodhounds in CUNYAC action, 72-47

Box Score The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped its final regular season CUNYAC game of the 2023-2024 campaign, as the Cougars fell to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 72-47. The conference clash took place at the Doghouse in midtown, Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 7-13 on the season (4-10 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to a record of 17-7 on the year (11-2 CUNYAC).
 
Pacing the Cougars on the evening was Mariame Gueye, as she tied for the game-high of 16 points (5-11 FG). She also snatched four rebounds and blocked a shot. Sophomore standout Sheily Quezada finished with nine points, six boards, a game-high five blocks, and three assists, and Andecia Liverpool finalized her evening with seven points and 10 rebounds. Finally, it was point guard Jennifer Metra pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
For John Jay College, Kamryn Hammond tied for the game-high of 16 points while also collecting six boards, tying for the game-high of six assists, and swiping three steals. Ayanna Edwards (5-10 FG) contributed 14 points, five rebounds, four dimes, and three steals, and Tiffany Bogle netted 12 points while pulling down four boards. Finally, it was Hannah Ruberto scoring 10 points, snatching a team-high eight rebounds, tying for the game-high of six assists, and swatting a team-best three shots.
 
The Bloodhounds opened the CUNYAC contest by scoring seven consecutive points, as Bogle capped John Jay's opening run with a converted shot off a beautiful feed from Hammond. Gueye got the Cougars on the scoreboard with a layup at the 6:38 mark. Medgar Evers used that bucket to kickstart an 8-3 run, as the Cougars sliced their deficit to two points, 10-8, with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter.
 
John Jay responded by netting six of the next seven points, as Hammond converted on a pair of freebees that pushed the Bloodhounds' edge to seven points, 16-9. The pendulum then swung towards Medgar Evers, as the Cougars finished the period on a 6-0 run to pull to within a point, 16-15, after 10 minutes of action. That aforementioned Medgar Evers spurt was capped by a trifecta from Bryanna Merger.
 
The Bloodhounds started the second quarter on a 9-4 run over the opening four minutes of the period, as John Jay took a 25-19 advantage. Medgar Evers responded with yet another run, rattling off six consecutive points to knot the game at 25 apiece following a made basket by Natala Reid-Small. The Bloodhounds quickly snatched the advantage back, with Bogle converting on a bucket and a free throw to give the Bloodhounds a 28-25 edge.

John Jay finished the half on a 14-6 run that spanned nearly five minutes as they took a 39-31 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Bogle was the primary contributor during the Bloodhounds' run to close the period, as she netted six points during that spurt.
 
The Bloodhounds completely dominated the second half of action, opening the third period with a 14-8 run that pushed their advantage to 14 points, 53-39. The John Jay outscored Medgar Evers 6-3 for the rest of the period, with Hammond converting on a jumper in the closing seconds of the quarter. John Jay's stellar defense held Medgar Evers to just two field goals in the period, and the Bloodhounds took a commanding 59-42 advantage into the final quarter.
 
Edwards connected on a triple to start the final quarter as John Jay took a 62-42 lead. From that points forward, the hosts never led by any less than 18 points, with John Jay's 72-47 lead at the end of the game serving as the Bloodhounds' largest lead of the night.
 
Neither squad shot well from the floor, but John Jay College was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, connecting on 27 of its 72 shots (37.5 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers College earned a conversion rate of just 26.3 percent (15-57). The Bloodhounds held a slim 47-45 edge on the boards, while also dishing 20 assists to the Cougars' nine. John Jay swiped 10 steals, while Medgar Evers had five, and the Cougars swatted six shots to the Bloodhounds' four. John Jay did win the turnover battle convincingly, committing just 15 miscues, Medgar Evers finished the evening with 28.
 
Medgar Evers will finish its regular season tomorrow evening, as the Cougars will travel to SUNY Purchase to take on the Panthers. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm. Following that game, the Cougars will look ahead to Saturday afternoon, when they compete as the No. 6 seed in the 2023-2024 CUNYAC postseason against No. 3 Baruch College. Start-time at the ARC Arena for Saturday's playoff clash is set for 1:00pm.
