Sheily Quezada's triple-double propels Cougars to 58-50 victory over SUNY Purchase; CUNYAC quarterfinal up next

Box Score The Cougars' women's basketball team finalized its 2023-2024 regular season on Thursday evening, defeating the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by a score of 58-50. The game took place in Purchase, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers improved to a mark of 8-13 on the season, while the Panthers slipped to 2-21.

In the victory for Medgar Evers, sophomore Sheily Quezada put forth an outstanding effort, registering a triple-double with a game-high 27 points to go along with 12 rebounds and a game-high 10 blocked shots. Sharpshooter Mariame Gueye connected on three trifectas, finishing with 13 points, tying for the game-high of five assists, and snatching four rebounds. Finally, it was freshman Aaliyah Lyons posted a double-double, scoring 12 points, collecting 13 rebounds, dishing four assists, and swiping three steals.

Despite the loss for SUNY Purchase, the Panthers were paced by Jessica McHugh, as she posted team-highs of 18 points (8-15 FG) and 11 rebounds. Carlye Graff added 14 points, four boards, and four steals, and Kaylena Phagnasay finished with seven points, six rebounds, and five dimes.

In what was a tightly-contested first quarter, neither squad took more than a four-point advantage. Medgar Evers held leads of 6-2 and 8-4, before finding itself trailing 11-10 inside the final 1:50 of the period. Lyons connected on a triple with 1:24 remaining in the quarter to give the Cougars a 13-11 edge, and that would cap the scoring for the opening 10 minutes. The second quarter featured three lead changes, before the squads entered the locker room at halftime knotted at 21 apiece.

The third quarter was the highest-scoring quarter of the night, with the Cougars and Panthers combining for 31 points. Medgar Evers trailed 31-29 with 3:59 to go in the period, before the Cougars put together an 11-2 run to snatch a 40-33 advantage going into the final quarter. That aforementioned Cougars run was highlighted by a pair of trifectas by Gueye.

Medgar Evers took a 42-33 advantage on a Quezada converted layup 38 seconds into the period, but the Panthers responded with a ferocious 11-2 run over a span of 2:54 to snatch a 44-43 advantage. Graff scored five points during that run, with McHugh accounting for four. The pendulum then swung the Cougars' way, with Medgar Evers going on an 11-3 run to take a 54-47 advantage with 1:58 left. Gueye netted seven points during that run, including a clutch three-point basket to cap the run. Quezada accounted for four points during that spurt.

SUNY Purchase would only connect on one field goal the rest of the way, and the Cougars connected on four free throws down the stretch to solidify the victory, winning the game by eight points (58-50).

Both clubs struggled shooting the basketball on the evening, with Medgar Evers converting on just 37.5 percent of its shots from the floor (21-56), and the Panthers earning a 29.7 percent conversion rate (19-64). The Cougars held a slim 47-43 edge on the glass, while also dishing 11 assists to the Panthers' 10. Medgar Evers registered 12 blocks, while the Panthers had one, and SUNY Purchase held a 13-10 edge in steals. The Panthers also won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while Medgar Evers finished with 23.

The Cougars will now gear up for the 2023-2024 CUNYAC Women's Basketball Tournament, as Medgar Evers will enter the postseason as the No. 6 overall seed. They'll travel to lower Manhattan to take on the No. 3 seeded Bearcats of Baruch College in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Start-time at the ARC Arena is scheduled for 1:00pm.
