Cougars struggle in second half, drop CUNYAC contest to Beavers; Freshman Derek Wicker scores team-high 13 points

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 96-57. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to a mark of 2-20 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-11 CUNYAC), and Medgar Evers was mathematically eliminated from CUNYAC postseason contention. CCNY improved to a record of 15-7, and 8-3 in conference action.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman Derek Wicker finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Veteran Joshua Jean Pierre netted 12 points, and tied for the game-highs of seven rebounds and six assists. Finally, it was Jackson Bartley adding 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Beavers were paced by the efficient Edward Beqiri, as he connected on 10 of his 14 shots from the floor, scoring a game-high 21 points in the process. He also snatched four rebounds and dished two assists, as well. Yassine Sakhi, CCNY's all-time leading scorer, netted 17 points, tied for the game-high of six assists, snatched four boards, and tallied a game-high four steals, and Chris Stone added 15 points and four assists. Ricardo Dixon finalized his evening with 14 points, five boards, and two steals, and finally, it was Elijah Patterson netting 13 points, snatching six boards, and dishing two assists.

CCNY raced out to an early 10-0 advantage in the opening 3:13 of action, courtesy of a pair of baskets by Beqiri, and one apiece by Justin Morety, Dixon, and Sakhi. Medgar Evers responded with a 10-4 run over a span of 4:06 to pull to within four points down (14-10) with 12:41 remaining in the half. Buckets by Guillen and Andre Evans Jr., a trifecta by Bartley, and a layup plus a free throw by Jean Pierre accounted for the Cougars' points during that run. The Beavers scored the next 13 points, taking a commanding 27-10 edge with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.

Over the ensuing 6:41 of action, Medgar Evers battled to keep the CUNYAC clash close, outscoring the Beavers 19-11 to pull to within nine points down (38-29) with less than 100 seconds left until halftime. A 6-2 Beavers run before the break, capped by a converted layup by Sakhi, put the visitors ahead 44-31 as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.

For the entirety of the second half, Medgar Evers wasn't able to decrease its halftime deficit, as CCNY built its lead up to as many as 41 points, before winning the contest convincingly by 39.

The Beavers shot exactly 50 percent from the field in their victory, knocking down 37 out of their 74 attempts. On the flip side, the Cougars converted on just 21 field goals, earning a 37.5 percent conversion rate (21-56). CCNY dominated the glass, snatching 46 rebounds compared to 31 for the hosts, and the Beavers also held a commanding 15-3 edge in steals. CCNY also tallied 24 assists, while Medgar Evers had 16 dimes, and the Beavers committed just 12 turnovers, with the Cougars finishing with 24.

Medgar Evers returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, as the Cougars travel to Baruch's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats. Start-time for the CUNYAC battle is scheduled for 7:30pm.
