Medgar Evers overwhelmed by Baruch in CUNYAC play as Bearcats earn 98-68 victory

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 98-68. The contest took place at the ARC Arena in lower Manhattan. With the loss, Medgar Evers slipped to 2-21 on the 2023-2024 campaign (0-12 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 15-8 on the season (11-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman Nicholas Guillen scored a team-high 16 points while dishing three assists. Derek Wicker added 12 points and five rebounds, and veteran Joshua Jean Pierre finalized his evening with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists. Finally, it was point guard Andre Evans Jr. scoring eight points, snatching a team-high eight rebounds, and dishing five assists.

Five players scored in double figures for the victorious Bearcats, including Devin Nicholson, as he connected on nine of his 13 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 22 points. He also snatched four rebounds, as well. Sayeed Osorio finished with 19 points and four boards, and Jehmehl Fair contributed 16 points, seven boards, and five assists. Gerard Nicholson scored 12 points while dishing five assists and swiping a game-high four steals, and Mohamed Gueye posted a double-double with 11 points and game-highs of 10 rebounds and six assists.

After trailing 10-6 in the opening 3:40 of action, the Cougars put together an 9-3 run over a span of 1:55 to take a slim 15-13 advantage. Guillen hit a pair of trifectas during that spurt, with Evans Jr. also registering a hoop and a freebee. It was all Bearcats from there, though. Baruch used a 13-0 run over a span of 3:55 to catapult ahead by a score of 27-15. Osorio and Devin Nicholson netted five points apiece during that spurt.

Later, holding on to a 31-22 advantage with 8:17 to go in the half, the Bearcats outscored the Cougars 30-12 for the remainder of the session to take a commanding 61-34 edge into the locker room at halftime. Devin Nicholson netted 13 of those 30 points during that time period.

Baruch continued to control the pace of the game in the second half, never leading by any less than 22 points for the entirety of the session. The Bearcats led by as many as 35 points (87-52) before winning the game by 30 (98-68).

Both teams shot well from the floor, with Baruch connecting on 42.9 percent of its shot attempts (36-84), and the Cougars earning a conversion rate of 42.4 percent (28-66). The Bearcats dominated the glass, snatching 51 rebounds to Medgar Evers' 34, and Baruch dished 26 assists, while the Cougars had 22. The Bearcats earned 11 steals while Medgar Evers had just two, and Baruch protected the basketball well, committing just eight miscues, while the visitors had 18.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Bulldogs to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
