Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quezada's dominance of Beavers puts Cougars on precipice of CUNYAC playoff berth as Medgar bests CCNY, 58-52

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team picked up a crucial CUNYAC victory last night at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, defeating the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 58-52. With the win, the Cougars inched closer to solidifying a spot in the 2023-2024 postseason, improving to a mark of 6-10 on the year (3-7 CUNYAC). The Beavers dipped to a record of 2-15 (1-9 CUNYAC) with the loss.

In the victory for the Cougars, sophomore standout Sheily Quezada continued her dominance over the Beavers. Back on December 1, 2023 at the Nat Holman Gymnasium, Quezada scored a career-high 31 points while snatching 26 rebounds. Earlier tonight, Quezada once again imposed her will on CCNY, netting 30 points while collecting a career-high 27 rebounds. She also swatted a team-high three shots, tallied three dimes, and registered a pair of steals. Mariame Gueye contributed 10 points and six rebounds, and Britonya Lloyd finished with six points and five boards.

For the Beavers, Kasia Morrison led the way with a team-high 19 points (5-6 FT). She also registered six steals and collected four rebounds. Anais Rosa netted 13 points, led all players with six assists, collected four boards, and swiped four steals, and Joscelyn Ramos finalized her evening with nine points, six rebounds, three helpers, and two steals. Anna Vikatos' seven steals led all players.

Trailing 4-2 in the opening 3:45 of action, Quezada scored nine consecutive points over a span of 2:46 as the Cougars took an 11-4 advantage. A converted triple by Morrison halted the Cougars' run, slicing the Beavers' deficit to four, 11-7, but Medgar Evers outscored the visitors 6-1 for the remainder of the period to take a 17-8 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

In a low-scoring second quarter that saw the teams combine for just 18 points (Medgar Evers netted 10, CCNY eight), the Cougars went up by as many as 14 points. The Beavers' Morrison connected on a triple with 41 seconds remaining in the half, and that would cap the scoring for the opening 20 minutes, as Medgar Evers took a 27-16 lead into the locker room at the break.

Leading 29-18 with 8:56 remaining in the third quarter, the Cougars scored six straight points (courtesy of a bucket apiece by Lloyd, Nana Samake, and Quezada) to take their biggest lead of the game, a 17-point edge, 35-18. The momentum of the CUNYAC clash started to turn at that juncture, however, as the Beavers outscored the hosts 20-6 over the ensuing 8:45 to pull to within three (41-38) with 11 tickets left in the third. Medgar Evers closed the quarter with a pair of converted freebees by Metra with three seconds remaining. After 30 minutes of action, the Cougars were clinging to a 43-38 advantage.

Medgar Evers took a seemingly comfortable eight-point edge (52-44) with 5:19 remaining following a converted Quezada free throw, but CCNY refused to quit, scoring the next five points, courtesy of a made freebee and bucket by Morrison, and a layup by Sarah Blenvins. That made it 52-49 Cougars with 4:09 left.

CCNY wouldn't get any closer, however, as the Beavers misfired on their final six shots from the floor, while also missing five of their eight free throw attempts.  Medgar Evers had their own struggles at the stripe inside the final four minutes, misfiring on eight of 10 at the line. Despite that, the Cougars used stellar late-game defense to close out the victory.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with CCNY converting on just 31.1 percent of its shot attempts (19-61), and the Cougars earning a conversion rate of 28.8 percent (23-80). The Cougars dominated the glass, collecting a whopping 74 rebounds to the Beavers' 34, and Medgar held a slight 14-13 edge in assists. CCNY did tally 20 steals to the Cougars' 13, and the Beavers also swatted 11 shots to Medgar's three. The Beavers also won the turnover battle, committing 24 miscues, while Medgar Evers finalized its evening with 31.

The Cougars will look to make it three victories in their last four games this Monday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Jamaica, NY to battle CUNYAC foe York College in another critical conference game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
