Cougars finish game on 20-1 run, put away Cardinals, 62-48; Quezada and Liverpool combine for 49 points, 24 rebounds

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team picked up its third victory in four games, outlasting the Cardinals of York College by a score of 62-48 Monday evening in CUNYAC action. The contest took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to a record of 7-10 on the 2023-2024 campaign (4-7 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals dipped a mark of 0-12 (0-6 CUNYAC).

In the victory for the red-hot Cougars, sophomore Sheily Quezada continued her stellar season, posting yet another double-double with game-highs of 28 points, 18 rebounds, and six blocked shots. She also dished a team-high six assists. Andecia Liverpool connected on eight of her 14 attempts from the floor, finalizing her evening with 21 points and six boards, and point guard Jennifer Metra contributed seven points, five rebounds, and two steals.

Despite the loss for York College, the Cardinals were paced by Alicia Gumbs, as she scored a team-high 19 points (9-11 FG) while registering a game-high seven assists. She also grabbed five rebounds, as well. Madison Plaza finished with 17 points, five boards, and two assists, and Imani Gibson contributed eight points and 18 rebounds.

Leading 8-4 with 4:42 remaining in the opening quarter, the Cougars finished the period on an 8-1 run, capped by a converted layup by Metra, to take a 16-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

The Cougars carried that aforementioned momentum into the second quarter, going up by as many as 17 points (30-13) before an 11-0 Cardinals run to end the half (capped by a Gibson triple) make it 30-24 Medgar Evers as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers led 41-33 with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter, but York College refused to let the Cougars run away with the game, as the Cardinals closed the period with six consecutive points (three points apiece by Plaza and Gumbs) to make it 41-39 Cougars after 30 minutes of play.

York's stellar defense in the early stages of the fourth quarter allowed the Cardinals to take a five-point lead, 47-42, with 6:33 remaining in the CUNYAC clash. Medgar Evers would snatch back the momentum, though, finishing the game strong with a sensational 20-1 run to win the contest by 14 points (62-48). Quezada and Liverpool scored nine points apiece in that aforementioned spurt.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with Medgar Evers converting on just 33.3 percent of its shot attempts (25-75), and the Cardinals earning a conversion rate of 28.3 percent (15-53). The Cougars won the battle on the glass, snatching 45 boards compared to 40 for the hosts, and Medgar Evers held a 17-10 advantage in assists. The Cougars swatted seven shots, while the Cardinals registered no blocks on the evening, and Medgar Evers won the turnover battle easily, committing just nine miscues compared to York's 21.

The Cougars will look to continue rolling on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Baruch College's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats in another crucial CUNYAC game. Start-time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
