Cougars cooled off by Baruch as balanced Bearcats register 76-40 victory in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 76-40. The contest took place at the ARC Arena in lower Manhattan. With the loss, Medgar Evers slipped to 7-11 on the 2023-2024 campaign (4-8 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats improved to 13-10 on the season (8-4 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Sheily Quezada put together another stellar effort, connecting on nine of her 16 attempts from the floor and scoring a team-high 18 points. The sophomore's 16 rebounds led all players, and her four blocked shots were a team-high. In addition, veteran Mariame Gueye knocked down a pair of triples, finalizing her evening with six points, four boards, three assists, and two steals.

Baruch College was led by Mia Castillo's triple-double, as she posted game-highs of 26 points, 18 steals, and 11 assists. She also snatched six rebounds and swatted a game-high five shots. Elissa Leung scored 17 points, snatched three boards, and dished three assists, and D'Andre McRae posted a double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, and two assists.

Aaliyah Lyons gave Medgar Evers an early 2-0 advantage by converting a layup 27 seconds into the contest, but it was all Baruch from there. The Bearcats went on a 10-0 run over the ensuing 4:26 to take a 10-2 advantage. Leung scored the first five points of that aforementioned run, and Castillo capped the spurt with a bucket. Baruch continued to push, eventually taking a 17-6 lead after one quarter of play.

Baruch College dominated the second quarter as well. After Medgar Evers sliced its deficit to seven (17-10) with buckets from Quezada and Andecia Liverpool, the Bearcats recorded 25 of the quarter's final 27 points to take a commanding 42-12 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Castillo scored nine points during that run, with McRae and Leung contributing six points apiece.

After the teams scored 16 points apiece in the third quarter, Baruch College scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to take a 66-30 edge. The Bearcats would go up by as many as 40 points in the period, before going on to win the game by 36, 76-40.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with Baruch College connecting on just 37.6 percent of its attempts from the floor (32-85), and the Cougars earning a conversion rate of 34.6 percent (18-52). The Bearcats held a 51-41 edge on the glass, while also piling a whopping 30 steals compared to eight for Medgar Evers. Baruch doubled-up the Cougars in assists, dishing out 24 dimes compared to 12 for the visitors, and the Bearcats won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 38.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome the Bulldogs to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm. Prior to the game, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics will honor seniors Mariame Gueye and Anamaria Dzagnidze in a special pregame ceremony.
