Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

New-look men's soccer team drops 2024 season opener, falling to Ursinus College, 8-0

The new-look Medgar Evers College men's soccer team opened its 2024 season on Friday evening, falling to the Bears of Ursinus College by a score of 8-0 at a match played at Patterson Field in Collegeville, PA.

Ursinus got on the board first, capitalizing off a Cougars turnover to take a 1-0 advantage at the 6:45 mark. Julian Faust dribbled the ball through two Medgar Evers defenders before slicing the ball home.

The Bears controlled possession and dictated the pace over the ensuing 20 minutes of action, eventually scoring back-to-back goals in the 21st and 25th minutes to catapult to a 3-0 edge. At the 21:28-mark, Joshua Coster sent a corner into the box, finding Faust, whose header found its way through the Cougars defense and into the net. Declan Curran's cross in the 25th minute deflected off a Cougar before ricocheting into the goal to account for the third Ursinus tally.

Faust registered the hat trick in the 33rd minute, collecting a pass from Enver Desic before smashing the ball home. That increased Ursinus' commanding advantage to 4-0. Medgar Evers did have a golden opportunity to get on the board at 44:01, when veteran standout Hamou Soumare nearly tallied a goal, but his shot was saved by Zach Matik to keep Medgar Evers off the scoreboard.

In the second half, the Bears used the momentum from the opening 45 minutes of action to continue peppering shots into the goal, with Desic (from Simon Muther) and Weir (from Coster) scored 21 seconds apart, at 51:00 and 51:21, respectively. That gave Ursinus a 6-0 edge. The Bears finalized the day's scoring with goals from Teddy Polutta (from Aidan McBrearty at 61:27) and Amar Dzombalic (from McBrearty at 72:44).

Matik earned the shutout for Ursinus, making five stops throughout the course of the clash. Clirian Nunez, playing his first game between the pipes as a Cougar, took the loss, however, he did stop 11 shots on the day. Veterans Taye Simon and Hamou Soumare, as well as newcomer Bertini Jean, each registered two shots for Medgar Evers.

The Bears held a 33-7 advantage in shots and a 16-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, NY to battle SUNY Maritime. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
